Both Dubrovnik and Brela will be packed with tourists in high season.

I'm in the process of figuring out which places I want to visit this September - not sure if I want to stay in Brela, Omis or Makarska for a few days before moving on to other places.

Carta Pisana,
We have a similar dilemma. We're arriving in Slovenia & leaving from Dubrovnik.Do we move on to Split from Hvar & drive the coast, stopping at Omis, etc.,or do we ferry from Hvar to Korkula,& drive south from there?

Syl -
I'm tentatively looking at staying first in Trogir (with a couple side trips) then out to Vis for 4 or 5 days, then Stari Grad on Hvar for 4 or days (hoping to help with the grape harvest if I hit it just right) and then 3 or 4 days on the mainland in either Brela, Omis or Makarska. I thought about trying to get up to Rab but I'll have to save that for another year when I focus on the northern islands.

I've read pretty much favorabe things about all 3 places - Makarska probably having the most in night life and urbanity. Let us know what you decide to do.

Take at look at Podgora just south of Makarska, beautiful small village, spectacular scenery. There are only 4 hotels all on the beach front. They are all 3 star, Hotel Minerva is the biggest, Hotel Aurora has been refurbished recently and has a very nice outdoor pool area, I haven't stayed at Hotel Podgorka but position is great and Hotel Primordia is the smallest, it has also been refurbished recently and the rooms are more like studios. There are lots of sobes where you can rent an apartment for a few days, lots of cafes and small restaurants, however if you are looking for nightlife Podgora is not the place apart from one or two of the hotels having dancing on the terrace in the evening. If you are looking for a bigger town then I would pick Makarska over Brela which is also a very small village. Hope this helps.

I personnally really like the Kastela Riviera. It's very well located between Split and Trogir, very picturesque with old stone houses, it has got loads of little cafes and a lovely seafront, AND it's not as touristy as places such as the Makarska Riviera which are packed. It's got an authentic feeling which you might not find there (i think). I have loads of pics on my site if you want to check it out.
Have a great holiday in any case.

Baska Voda is much the same as the other small villages along the Makarska Riveria, small and touristy, mainly Germans although the Brits are starting to return. You will find that most well known towns/villages along the Dalmatian coast will be busy during the summer months, July and August being the worst. It really is a beautiful coastline especially the Makarska Riveria, I guess I'm biased as I have family in Podgora!!
Wherever you decide I'm sure you will enjoy.

Patricia-
I saved the link for Hotel Primordia awhile ago - looks like a great little hotel. Though I'm thinking of trying private accomdation this time around just to do something different. Thanks for the insights.

Hi again,
We stayed at Hotel Primordia just before it was refurbished, it only reopened in 2003. The position is wonderful, the beach is virtually about 10 steps from the hotel's front door. We had a studio room with twin beds, ensuite, a small seating area, fridge and two burner cooktop, a beautiful big balcony overlooking the beach. Not sure if there are still cooking facilities in the rooms since refurbishment, but I do know they have installed A/C. There are limited public areas in this hotel but they do have a small dining room for breakfast and an outside terrace.
The Hotel Aurora reopened in 2002, its fairly typical of Croatia hotels but the rooms are a good size, twin beds etc. small balcony some with seaviews but no A/C in the rooms although you can hire a portable unit at a cost. Breakfast here is great, buffet style, plenty of choice from continental to cold meats etc. The hotel has an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool which is very nice although again the beach is just steps away. This hotel is owned by a Croatian company based in Germany and unfortunately the webiste is only in German www.misir.de/
The manager and reception staff speak reasonable English so I just faxed them and got all the info I needed.
Hotel Mediteran (which I forgot in my first post) just a few more steps away and is slightly older, I first stayed here way back in 1967, I would say it may be looking a bit tired now. Hotel Minerva is the biggest and was always thought to be best hotel, I know the manager here but we don't stay here as it does not appeal to me and again it is looking a bit tired.
Hotel Podgorka is right in the heart of the village, great position but could be a bit noisy, I haven't seen their rooms so I can't comment.
Regarding private accommodation, in Podgora there are many to chose from, some good, some not so good. Most of them are a few minutes away from the beach area or overlooking the boat harbour. If you are interested I could recommend a couple of places.
