Breakfast in Zurich?

Hi,

I have a 5 hour layover in Zurich on my way to Rome. I would like to have a casual breakfast and see a little of the city. Any suggestions?

Also, after clearing customs, is there a good place to store baggage?

Thanks,

Dana

Interesting question!

Where's Ursula?

As many breakfasts as I've had in Zürich (and Switzerland), I've always eaten in the hotel as in (virtually?) all cases breakfast is included with the room.

I would hope the Rösti restaurant in the Hauptbahnhof serves breakfast. This is a super restaurant. If you don't have experience with Rösti you're in for a treat. Basically what Americans would call "hash brown" potatoes (grated), they're tastier than any in the States. Many different varieties, and that restaurant serves more than a dozen as I remember, perhaps many, many more.

My offhand recommendation would be for Bernerrösti which I think are the variety with cheese and bacon/ham incorporated, topped with a fried egg. That's the style I'd recommend anyway, regardless of whether that's the Berner variety or not.

Quite possible the Mövenpick on the right hand side of the Bahnhofstrasse (facing the lake) serves breakfast. And of course any of the hotel dining rooms would serve breakfast, although at a pretty steep price in most cases.

twenj

Dana! Here I am!
There are lockers at the airport and at the trains station. No problem at all!

As for the breakfast, best would be "Sprüngli" at Paradeplatz. Otherwise, you can just go to any cafe -- I suggest at the Bahnhofstrasse (there is even a MacDo close to the train station -- and you will be served a breakfast with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, o.j. bread, rolls, croissants, butter, jam,.....
Usually, you can get breakfast until lunch time.
When you are at the Bahnhofstasse, you should post some chocolate truffles at "Teuscher", the very best (I think they are even present in NYC)!
have a nice stay!

Ed: Rösti is soo heavy to my stomach in the morning. I cannot eat THAT. This also goes for eggs and bacon. I am rather on the light side! ;-)

Ed: Forgot about it! The Mövenpick on the Bahnhofstrasse is closed down for the moment. The are completely renovating the building. I don't think there will be another MP after that. Never mind, there are enough places for food around.

PS: Do not forget, we are 6 hours ahead with regard to to US ET! So when this message was posted, it was almost midnight over here and I was ready to get my big nap. Understand?
