doesn't say much for the quality of breakfast in Venice, does it?

last time we were there, we would walk round to the local bakery and buy lovely cornetti, and then make our own coffee. one of the advantages of staying in an apartment!

The only drawback to staying at the Hotel Foscari Palace earlier this year was that, with its wonderful breakfast buffet, we couldn't fit in many extra caffe e cornetti.

As many may know, Italian / Venetians are generally not big breakfats eaters. I wonder if the posts of this blog is intented to show that having breakfast or just a cup of coffee does not cost always the prices of Caffe Florian or Quadri at the terrace. Even at these two places, I had espresso for €1.50 standing at the bar or sitting on the bar stool for € 2.00/2.50.

Hotel Foscari Palace's breakfast buffet is very good. I remember there lots of fresh fruits and pastries.

And I realised the first bar on the blog "Cupido" on Fondamenta Nove is the place where I usually take a coffee or a glass of wine ( with a free small basket of potato chips ) before taking a boat for San Michele > Murano > ... The place is lively, often full of ACTV employees besides of course tourists like me.

We enjoyed the extensive breakfast included in the reasonable tariff at the Hotel Marconi when we were in Venice in December.

A fortifying breakfast in the lovely breakfast room prepared us to face the freezing days when we ventured out onto the Grand Canal at the Rialto Bridge vaporetto stop!

When I reflect on it, Venice really is more of a Campari spritz or ombra place. Not like Rome, Naples or best of all, Trieste, where the coffee is excellent.

I have trouble with coffee in Venice.

When I order a cafe Americano, the barista usually gives me me a small amount of coffee in a cup along with a little pitcher of milk.

Should I just order a cafe latte instead?

I just want the equivalent of French cafe au lait.

Wouldn't a cappuccino do? It's about the same proportioned coffee/steamed milk mixture with froth on top.

A cafe latte will be mostly hot milk. Try a cafe macchiato - it's espresso with just a touch of steamed milk, not nearly as much as a cappuccino.

Tarquin, I was told not to order cappuccino in Italy unless for breakfast, not after 11 AM.

I like to have a coffee around 3 PM.

One barista near Rialto Market made me a nice American style coffee served in a small pot (about 2 cups) with milk on the side and charged me 6 euros for it. I thought that was excessive considering it was NOT Florian.

Well, I agree with Holly then - a macchiato is a respectable drink at any time of day and you can ask for extra milk - latte in piu.
