Bread and Tulips

Planning for our second trip to Venice (on Christmas day), so I got this from Netflix. I loved it! Even the DH, who isn't crazy about subtitles, enjoyed it.

Lovely scenes of Venice, sweet romance, nice comedic touch and really nice to see a "real" woman--in the Anna Magnini, Sophia Loren sense--as the sexy lead.

Geez, I enjoyed this!

I saw that film when it first came out
for films on the darker side:
Don't look now and The Comfort of Strangers.

Hello, MelJ, I saw "Bread and Tulips" also and really enjoyed it, in fact I wouldn't mind watching it again. Arriving in Venice on Christmas Day, lovely! Have a wonderful time.

Thanks LoveItaly (so do I!). I can't wait! This trip we are taking our daughter and two teen-aged (15, 13) grandsons. 3 day in Venice, 5 in Rome. We're so excited to show them Venice. To me, it's like nothing you'll ever see anywhere else. Truly magical! I just hope we haven't oversold it

The film is visually beautiful but I consider it a different interpretation than Mann. Thanks for responding.

My favorite Venice movie is "Summertime" starring Katherine Hepburn. I would have liked to have visited the city in the 1950s.

I thought it was a funny little movie, in the same vein as "Shirley Valentine" but not quite as good.

Villa, an entirely different generation and a different era in filmmaking. Anyway, I like it for the scenery more than the plot.

I thought that the theme was the same in both films - a middle aged woman steps out of her boring lifestyle and discovers herself in some new and exotic location. B&T had some great shots of Venice, and SV was on a Greek island. I liked both of them, but I would prefer to watch SV a 2nd time.

Oh I see, yes I was commenting on Bread and Tulips of course and not Summertime. The recent miniseries on the life of Casanova (with David Tennant as the young and Peter O'Tooole as the old) has a lot of Venice action too.
