Thanks for those beer links.

I really want to experience Bratislava as more than a day trip and splitting the time with Vienna means another one nighter. (We already have two of those on this 18 day trip). I'm actually a fan of one night stays as long as they are a)small towns, and b)are interspersed with longer stays. So even though it would mean back-tracking, it's only an hour so we could do a day trip to Vienna if Bratislava didn't hold our interest.

There is also a castle, Devin Castle, that looks like a possible day trip from Bratislava. Anyone done that and is it 'worthwhile'?

Isabel, are you plannng on writing a trip report after your trip? If not, would you be able to at least comment on Bratislava? My bucket list consists of a trip to Budapest, Bratislava, and Vienna some day. Perhaps 2019 or 2020. We already have our 2018 trips planned! But would love to hear your thoughts on Bratislava, how much time it needs, what you did, etc.

We've been to Devin a couple of times; we drive our personal vehicle but I know there are public buses and a boat that run from Bratislava. I think you can also hike to the ruins from the Old Town. In July I would plan to arrive early to avoid crowds, the heat, and the mosquitoes.

Whether visiting the ruin is worthwhile is for you to decide. Personally, the ruins at Cachtice (SK) and Hainburg (AT) better held our attention for the approach, the views, and the photography options (and lack of mosquitoes).

Slovakia days

I am surprised how many people answer your 'what to do in Bratislava' question with suggestions to go to Germany. Geez! Slovakia has tons of things to see. Take a look at the Master Paul Altar in Levoca, the Driny Caves, the Hervartov Wooden Church in Bardejov, the old town of Kosice, Spis Castle, wine tour in the Little Carpathians, hiking in the Tatras - many of the sights in Slovakia are a day trip away or an overnight if you can swing it. There are buses and trains or hire a driver. Traveling to and between places that are NOT big or famous cities is extremely rewarding.

I would recommend you travelling from Vienna to Bratislava by boat https://twincityliner.com/en (in summer).

Beckov ruins or Trencin castle, Orava castle are nicer.
