Chatham sounds awesome but it is rather far from being an easy day trip from Liverpool or Manchester! Ditto the River Lea (which is a great place, I walked some distance along it fifteen years ago and lived to tell the tale).

At the risk of bigging up Sheffield again (but, meh, I live here) Have a look at the flickr.com sheffield group. I think that the city has an extrordinary mix of industrial history and, to a degree, wasteland, combined with modern urban development. I reckon it would tick your boxes

Excuse me whilst I check myself for sense....
There was a stunning programme on BBC last night about Thomas Telford- the Man who Built Britain.
Lots of fantastic enlightenment engineering where you're going.

I know this thread is stale, but I have a question: how come it doesn't come up on a search for Bradford, or for Preston, or for Wigan, or for Liverpool or Manchester for that matter?

It's weird, though, because some threads, or at least some keywords in some threads, get indexed very fast. Lots and lots of more recent threads come up in searches.
I guess Bradford, Preston, Wigan just aren't destinations for the Fodor's demographic!
