Berlin: Knut, the Polar Bear, Grows Up

One of Berlin's most popular sights for locals last year was Knut, a cub polar bear that lost its mother when she abandoned him and then became a controversial but phenomenally popular inmate at Berlin's Zoo.
Animal rights groups or some anyway urged the cute cuddly cub to be euthanized as they saw his being raised by zoo personnel animal abuse i guess
anyway the cute cuddly photos splashed in the media insured Knut's being allowed to live after a groundswell arose to let the bear be raised by zoo officials and Knut quickly became a mega Berlin attraction.
anyway a year later Knut has grown into a 350-pound teen-ager and questions are still being posed how would being hand raised affect him? (Some media speculate that Knut is gay and also overweight.)

and though the crowds have died down dramatically Knut, at last word at least, was still a star attraction at Berlin's Zoo.

Polar bear cubs are something like a fad in Germany those days.

The Berlin one is the most popular, as the Berliners know about public relations.

Nurembergīs Tiergarten is proud of his Flocke polar bear cub.

Stuttgartīs Wilhelma zoo also has a polar bear cub named Wilbär (or Wilbear) whis is raised by his mother.

Ouwehand zoo in Holland also has one. They are everywhere it seems.
Amersfoort zoo has a Siberian tiger cub, which went outside for the first time today. I didn't bother to join the crowds to get a photo I'm afraid. Maybe tomorrow if i have time. I would have like to see the baby hippo twins in Emmen, but sadly one has died. The tiger was one of twins too, where one died soon after birth.

I know this has nothing to do with Knut and that pandas are not bears, but at the risk of prompting a whole slew of cute baby animal photos, I have to share this:

we actually saw Knute at the fantastic Berlin Zoo last month ~ no longer a tiny cuddly cutie, but still pretty entertaining..he was doing some sort of dance move... stepping forward, then back, shifting his weight, doing a little sashaying around, dipping his head. He seemed healthy and happy.
