Where would you east coasters go for a "long weekend" in Europe?
Will be going to NYC from CA for a graduation next week. Can add about 5 extra days to my trip (after 4 nights in NYC.) Would like to hop over to someplace "easy" in Europe or UK. (I am thinking about the ease of someplace like Amsterdam ....compact, KLM bus direct to hotel.)
Will be alone, using my Delta pass; Rome-Venice-Milan-Edinburgh flights too full to attempt standby. Do not want to go to Paris this time.
My main interests for this trip would just be the "getaway" factor:
lots of walking and lots of time wasting in cafes! I like cities.
Have been to Amsterdam many times, I am considering playing it safe and just going back there. Some other possibilities are Dublin, Vienna, Zurich. I want to minimize logistics since it will be a short trip.

Dublin is the closest of your possibilities, so if you have an interest in going there, pick that one.
Vienna is perfect for walking and time wasting in cafes...so that's also a good choice. Easy to get from the airport to a hotel.
Copenhagen also seems like it would fit your list of requirements.

Hi vivi,
Luzern, right on the lake with stunning scenery. Just an hour by direct train from the Zürich airport, a very easy destination.

HI V,
>Some other possibilities are Dublin, Vienna, Zurich.
Zurich would be nice.
The SBahn from the airport goes directly to the main train station.
We will bw staying at the http://www.st-josef.ch/
when we visit.
We have also planned a daytrip to Luzern and another to Stein am Rhein
Look into the Zurich pass. You can buy it at the train station at the airport.

London! We were supposed to go there for a long weekend in April but had to cancel at the last minute. There's always so much to do there and lots of flights on Delta. Another possibility is Berlin which is also a direct flight from JFK on Delta.

Either London or Amsterdam. We've done extra long weekends for both and loved them. Though surprisingly I loved Amsterdam more than London.
We spent 4 days in February in Amsterdam and our only regret was we wished we had more time it's a lovely pedestrian friendly city with great train service to other areas easily and cheaply available. With an Amsterdam Pass you get into 29 museums free and all your in city trams, metro and busses are included. This pass can be purchased for anywhere from 1-3 days.
We found it a great value for our money as well as a fascinating city to visit.

I would go to London, which is a great place to just walk and lounge around.
Amsterdam or Dublin would be another option.
What about Brugges? There is a decent amount of service to Brussels, and a short train ride will put you in Brugges, which definitely seems to fit your criteria. Brussels itself is even worth a day.
Lisbon or Barcelona or even Madrid would be good choices, but I would guess that, with fewer direct flights, that they will suffer from the same "too full" problem that you mentioned before?
Copenhagen would be another option, as mentioned, but would be more (often much more) expensive than just about anywhere other than Oslo. And I am specifically including London when I say that. Indeed, I don't find London that ridiculous, provided you can control the shopping.

THANKS for all the great suggestions! Looks like I will be able to get a standby seat to Edinburgh after all, so that shall be the destination.
Was able to book cancellable-at-the-last-minute hotel right off the Royal Mile. Will be able to spend 4.5 days, daugher is going to meet me there for 2 nights. I am excited though I havent been able to savor the anticipation since this is so last-minute; this is the least planning/fretting I have ever done for a trip.
