Boys Choir in Regensburg

Our five night stay in Nuremberg next month coincides with the Boys Choir Christmas Concert in
Regensburg.

We're planning to make a day trip to Regensburg, so we're toying with buying tickets for the concert, but are having some trouble figuring out the logistics.

The concert will be held at the Regensburg Audimax auditorium near the university (Albertus-Magnus-Straße 2, 93053 Regensburg).

We're travelling by train and on foot - best I can tell, it's a 40 minute walk from the Regensburg Hbf, via a somewhat convoluted walking route.

Curious if anyone out there in FodorLand can confirm this, or offer alternate suggestions - a closer train stop, tram, bus, etc?

Or for that matter, alternate Christmas concerts?

Can't help with the logistics, but hearing the Sparrows was for me an experience of a lifetime. Be warned: it might be quite cold. Our concert was in the cathedral, and I froze despite having a very warm, long coat and boots. You should do better in the auditorium.

While in Regensburg be sure to visit the excellent Christmas market if you're there at the right time.

The closest stop is Regensburg Universität. #6 runs every 15 minutes to HBF (main railway station), takes about 8 minutes.

Go to http://www.bayern-fahrplan.de
English available. Plug in the address Albertus- ...) and HBF, date and time. It will come up with options

I am not sure the Audimax is the perfect location, though. As far as I know the university Regensburg is pretty young, the ambience might be a bit modern/sterile. Musically it will be very nice, I am sure.

I'll check for other Christmas concerts later.

Thank you both - I knew I could count on the Fodorites!

I wish the concert was in the cathedral Underhill - much easier to find. Are the Sparrows and the boys choir one and the same? We'll definitely visit the Christmas markets.

I've been researching Christmas concerts all day Ingo - I have a pretty good list for Nuremberg, Colmar and Strasbourg, but am floundering with the Engadine (Dec 1-7). Haven't found in any Freiburg im Breisgau either (Dec 8-12).

We didn't make it to as many concerts as we'd have liked last year, so trying to plan a wee bit better this time around.

I've not run across any other options for the boy's choir while we're in the area - I'd found them on the cathedral website, but alas they won't be singing there while we're in the area (Dec 13-17).

Regensburger Domspatzen ("cathedral sparrows") is the full name of the choir.

Unfortunately the venue is as ugly as can be. Regensburg's university is a 1970s foundation and nothing but concrete. That includes the Audimax. The acoustics must be good, but the atmosphere - hm.

The choir tours with that Christmas programme, though. I had the chance to hear their concert in Passau cathedral a few years ago. That was beautiful. They are in passau again on Dec 4, in Ingolstadt in the main church on Dec 2, in Bamberg on Dec 11, and several smaller locations. All concerts are listed on their website - in German, though: http://www.domspatzen.de/de/chor/ver.../konzerte.html

(P.S. It's a pity you are not in my area right now - our choir is doing Brahms' German Requiem tomorrow, I am sure you would like that...)

Well, traveling with "my" orchestra we had once a concert at Audimax. The auditorium was a quite sterile building in concrete and I remember it as being quite distant from the center. But I have very nice memories of Regensburg.

Thank you quokka - Bamberg - so close yet so far - we'll miss that one by two days.

Thanks for the clarification on the name - I figured Domspatzen referred to the church somehow, but didn't bother to look it up.

The Audimax is right in the center of the uni, the central bus stop is 100m west of it. U Regensburg is accessible by bus from the main station by RVV busses no. 2b, 4, 6, 11. The Audimax is ugly, a prototypic example of the brutalistic concrete building style of the seventies, but the acustics is fine.

The boy choir is called the Sparrows.

Passau was my favorite town around Christmas time.

>Friedenskirche, Palmplatz 11, 90419 Nürnberg ...

... almost as ugly as the audimax in Regensburg (well, almost). But personally, I prefere the Windsbacher over the Domspatzen, so I wouldn't care about the building.

@ingo: Great overview! So I have a much better choice where to go in advent But don't forget the opera please: Benvenuto Celini and Hänsel und Gretel are on stage on that days. Tickets here: https://www.staatstheater-nuernberg....page=spielplan

Thank you Ingo!

My calendar is now chock-a-block with possibilities.

I've also found a Christmas Market in Davos and a Romanian youth choir in Klosters that will fit in nicely with our week in Scuol.

I've scoured the Christmas Market programs for Colmar and Strasbourg and come up with several options there as well (although we'll most likely forgo Strasbourg for Basel instead).

I'm feeling much more organized than last year.
