Boppard or St Goar Hotel?
Has anyone stayed at the Hotel Garni Gunther in Boppard or the Hotel Zum Lorely in St Goar? I am specifically concerned about noisy trains at night. We will be in the Middle Rhine Valley May 13 to May 17, 2009. Thanks for your help.

Hello Mallary:
If you plans allow for staying a bit further up the Rhine, you could stay at the Hotel Krone in Assmannshausen, a delightful small hotel with a great view of the river and spaced away from the train tracks. Assmannshausen is a village that seems to have avoided tourists and is noted for its production of red wine. We try to stay at the Krone everytime we have to depart from Frankfurt; a great place to decompress. Gradyghost

I don't think I would be too concerned about Zum Lorely in St. Goar. Herrstrasse is well away from the train tracks.
I'll have to look for Garni Gunther in Boppard; I don't know it's location off hand, but I stayed in Boppard in 2004, and where I stayed train noise was not a problem.
On the whole, there are not that many trains through those towns during sleeping time. Unless you are in a hotel right near the tracks (like Kranenturm), train noise is not a real problem.

The whole Rhine gorge is noisy: main train routes and major roads along both river banks, and don't underestimate the ships on the river either. There is hardly a way of escaping traffic noise. Whereever you stay, bring earplugs.

We slept in St Goar at Hotel am Markt, which is right down the staircase from the train station. We had the window slightly ajar, and heard neither trains nor cars during the night. St Goar is very very tiny, while Boppard is a nice-size town, beautiful waterfront.. The Rheinfels ruins at St Goar make a nice wander. We rented bikes in Boppard for an afternoon and rode up/down the riverside, most pleasant.
