Booking tickets for opera/ballet etc

Hi everyone,
I am travelling to Vienna and Prague in December and would like to see some ballet and/or opera performances in one or both cities. Could anyone recommend web sites that I could book through that won't charge heavy fees? Also, what shows, concerts etc. would you recommend? What theaters are best?
Thanks a million!

We purchased tickets for Operas at both the National Theatre and the State Opera in Prague on the first day of our arrival.
However, the seats were not too good but we were mainly interested in just being in the beautiful buildings.

elcon,

You may want to try the theatres’ english ticketing websites:

Vienna state opera:
http://www1.culturall.com/ctisto/pls...n=2&lang=2

Vienna Volksoper:
http://www.volksoper.at/Content.Node...erkauf1.en.php

Prague state opera:
http://www.opera.cz/en/predprodej.ht...be76b4633cac9e

Prague national theatre:
http://www.ticketsonline.cz/opera.php

Hope this helps, enjoy your trip

Phil.

I got a good seat for the Viennese Opera House (late October last year) at the ticket office two days ahead - but that was for ballet, not opera, don't know if that's less popular.

Thank You Phil! Now, can anyone tell me if any theaters in Prague are within walking distance to Old Town Square? How about Stephensdom in Vienna? This is where I will be staying. I am going solo, so I like to stay close at night to my hotels if possible.

PRAGUE: Yes, Both the National Theatre AND the Estates Theater are within walking distance of the Old Town. The National Theatre is right on the River at the Legli Bridge in a beautiful building about 1/4 mile upriver from the Charles Bridge.
Following the Opera we had a refreshment in the Grand Cafe Slovia across the street from the NT.(Rick Steves says this is the "thing" to do).
We also attended an AFTERNOON piano/violin recital at the Villa Bertramka (Motzart Museum). this was NOT at all close to the O.T. We needed to take a metro. (www.bertramka.cz).
All this info is explained in Rick Steves Best of Eastern Europe (available at the library)

I bought tickets to the Staatsoper in Vienna from their website, www.staatsoper.at. However, while the initial pages are in English, the page where you purchase your tickets online is not. If you don't speak German, pull up a German-English translator site in a different window/tab. You can also make a request for tickets through their "contact us" e-mail, and you will receive a written reply via the mail.

I would suggest buying your tickets as soon as possible. I bought mine on June 1, the first day of internet sales, and many seats were already gone, even though my performance is not until mid-October. (Perhaps this is because the opera I am seeing, La Traviata, is very popular). I managed to get 8th row center orchestra and was ecstatic.

If I recall correctly from my last visit, the Stephansdom is within walking distance of the Staatsoper.
