Book about French Wine ?

Can anyone recommend a good book about French wine?

I want to read up on the subject before out trip.

Sorry about posting this twice. I accidentally posted this in the general Europe area first.

One of the classics is Alexis Lichine's Guide to the Wines and Vineyards of France.

If in case you'd want to learn with, or peruse, a book that will be useful beyond French wines, The Oxford Companion To Wine (edited by Jancis Robinson) provides either a quick look up on, or a detailed description of, any wine-producing region in the world up to a summarized history and methods of a particular producer.

Even the bottle labels are nicely reproduced in this very good book.

Thanks ekscrunchy!

I got Lichine's Guide on Amazon for $0.98 plus shipping.

It's great. It is a little dated as it was last updated in 1986, if I remember correctly. But none the less I am learning about the wines, terroir and history of Burgundy.

My only concern now is the affordability of the better wines on the route.

It's more about history than the wine itself, but "Wine and War" is fascinating.

I was also looking for a book about French wine, and ended up buying "Wines of the World", by DK - the Eyewitness Companions. I found it quite adequate in describing all wines and wine regions of France. The bonus is, it also has excellent information about major wine regions of the world.

A second to "Wine and War." For a general introduction "The Red Wines of France" is good.
