Blackpool Lights 2012 - Tripping the Lights Fantastic!
the annual Blackpool Lights, one of the most popular outdoor events in all of Europe, have taken the stage - if going to England in the coming weeks consider taking in this unique show in one of the most unique and weird places IME in all of Europe.
Immensely popular with Brits (except most who contribute to Fodors) this event draws working class types from all around to either drive their cars along the several miles of lights strung up along the Promenade along the cold sea - and Blackpool itself is also immensely popular - reinventing itself whereas many other once thronged British seaside resorts have become ghost towns with more OAPs coming for cheap bedsits than tourists. And Blackpool's Pleasure Beach (? name) amusement park is still rated the #2 paid attraction in Britain I believe. so if kids in tow another reason for doing Blackpool!

You'd better hurry, as the illuminations finish on Nov 4th.
I have seen the lights a few times this year (I live close by), and general consensus is it's better than last year, with some new designs. When the refurbishment of the Tower is complete in 2013, the light show will be spectacular - a bit like the illuminations on Eiffel Tower.

"Immensely popular with Brits (except most who contribute to Fodors)"
What can I say. I agree with the part in brackets, and I struggle with the first word. Good discussion about these two views on BBC radio 4 in the summer.
Anyway back to the top.

well you can at least be sure QE 2 didn't flip the switch though each year some luminary - like Dr Who characters recently - have done the job. Yup immensely popular with ordinary Brits but not the stiff upper lipped Cotswoldian gated estated crowd that inhabits Fodors with a few excveptions

For lights on the other coast, The Chronicle of Light at Winchester Cathedral continues through this weekend. A combination of live and filmed performances projected on a screen and cathedral walls, it tells the story of this historic church and town.
We caught it last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.
