Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2012

We will be in Seville for 4 nights from 20th September during the Bienal de Flamenco. I have looked at the programme on http://www.labienal.com/programa/ and am wondering which performance would be a good choice for us having had no experience of live flamenco. I have tried googling the artists with only some success. It has been a long procedure using Google Translate! Also, I don't know if the video clips I see are from past performances or excerpts of what will be performed at the Bienal.
I am attracted to the Pepa Montes and Ricardo Mino performance (the 8.30 pm start at Teatro Lope de Vega also appeals) and perhaps Paloma Fantova and Macarena Ramirez who are dancers, but information about them is still to come. We enjoy classical music, including guitar, and wish to see flamenco dancing.
Can anyone help with information about any of the performances during our 4 nights in Seville please? The Bienal seems too good an opportunity to miss.

Several great performances on your nights. I strongly recommend the premiere of fabulous dancer Rosario Toledo new performance in Teatro Central on the 20th. She's accompanied by powerful singer José Valencia (he's one of the absolute best in the difficult art of singing to flamenco dance) and one of the most talented up and coming flamenco guitar players Dani de Morón.
http://www.labienal.com/programa/ale...o-garca-lorca/

We invited Rosario Toledo and Dani de Morón to the new Oslo Opera a couple of years ago on the occasion of the Norwegian flamenco club's 20th anniversary. Then David Palomar did the singing. A huge success and a night to remember for a long time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TnE_UQ2qGY

I also think you should go and see a night of very classical flamenco Sevilla style with Pepa Montes and Ricardo Miño in wonderful Teatro Lope de Vega on the 22nd. This couple has been up there for a long time. http://www.labienal.com/programa/una...-hacia-dentro/

Later in the night, at 11pm, El Junco - another of my absolute favourites - dances in the outdoor scene at Espacio Santa Clara. I don't know the female dancer Eli Parilla, but the rest of the artists are brilliant for sure, and she most probably too. Saw El Junco in Málaga some four years ago in the performance on the clip. One of my five-six best flamenco nights ever, and they are counted in hundreds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1I6bSrDGqc

On the 23rd, legendary singer Carmen Linares will fill up the huge and modern Maestranza theater. The major flamenco singers use to invite special guest artists that can be half the fun. http://www.labienal.com/programa/oas...ndez-flamenco/

Here she is in Carlos Saura's famous movie "Flamenco" from 1995: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2H8UoCBNcw

Buy tickets online: http://www.generaltickets.com/
Works perfectly, have used this service frequently for the past five years.

Seems as if the El Junco performance is sold out. They nevertheless use to release some extra tickets later in the summer. It's also always possible to get tickets outside the venue for a few € more. Only few tickets left also for the Rosario Toledo performance.

Thank you very much for all the detailed information. I can see why El Junco is booked out.
We will make a decision and book. I expect it's relatively easy to catch public transport or taxis to the venues and back. We are staying in Santa Cruz.

No problem with taxis to and from the venues. Lope de Vega and Maestranza are both five minutes walking from the Santa Cruz district. Teatro Central is a couple of miles north, across the city river Guadalquivir. A 5-6€ taxi ride.

And intimate Casa de la Memoria is in the Santa Cruz district. Popular with tourists and something completely different than the Bienal performances, but this is also the real deal. Just very talented artists perform here, and often some of the very greatest. Shifting artists every night. Often Pastora Galván dances here, voted best female flamenco dancer of 2010 by Spanish critics. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...Andalucia.html

Pastora Galván performs together with her singer husband Cristian Guerrero in Casa de la Memória, often once a week. I saw her here during the last Bienal, and two days later she tore down the Lope de Vega theater. Here she is on Andalusian TV together with Guerrero. If she is on, you must go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2SBUcrJgeQ

The program at Casa de la Memória is updated here (sister and brother Adela and Rafael Campallo are also fabulous dancers): http://www.casadelamemoria.es/eventos.htm

I stumbled upon this question and excellent answers while I was looking at the the program for the Bienal de Flamenco considering which show to go to. We will be in Seville from 25th to 30th of September.

I'd very much appreciate it if we can get some performance recommendations during that period.

Mickeyinny,

On the 26th there are two singer/dancer performances that both might be fabulous. At 8.30 National Dance Prize winner 2008 Javier Barón dances to the voice of Esperanza Fernández in wonderful Teatro Lope de Vega. Very few tickets left. http://www.labienal.com/programa/arrabales/
Javier Barón: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73bbCu01q18
Esperanza Fernández: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwgA73QDrn4

And at 11pm, singer José Valencia (see above) will eventually be accompanied by dancer Joaquín Grilo in the Espacio Santa Clara. If I was to pick one performance during these days, it would probably be this. Could be raw. Grilo can be totally out of this world, I saw him in a never to forget performance during the last Bienal. Here together with Dorantes on piano. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOjtXiPl8Rk (Only few tickets left)

The next day Fuensanta la Moneta, voted best female flamenco dancer of 2009 by Spanish critics, performs together with dancers Javier Latorre and Antonio Canales. They have both been among the best male dancers during the past decades. In Teatro Central at 11pm. Here also, only few tickets left. Fuensanta La Moneta in action in famous tablao Casa Patas in Madrid a couple of months ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbO_lw2xWtU
Antonio Canales in Carlos Sauras movie "Iberia" from 2005: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJWe_Tomnwc
Javier Latorre, also in Casa Patas recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIjg9W0k69w

On the 28th at 11pm, Pansequito will fill Teatro Lope de Vega with traditional flamenco song. Could be extremely powerful if you get the feel for the way of singing, and this could be a very strong artist/audience experience. Pansequito on Andalusian TV, one day before flamenco was named part of the world cultural heritage in 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bPzK7N9iVg

And of course, there are still tickets left to the closing gala in the huge and modern Maestranza theater on the 30th. Cutting edge dancer Rafaela Carrasco from Sevilla is in charge of a performance about the history of flamenco dance in her home town. Here in her latest performance with which she won two choreography prices during the 2010 Bienal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktO_m7YXIMw

Thank you so much for the information! I would definitely would like to go to see Fuensanta la Moneta performance. We haven't decided which area we will stay at. Do you have any suggestions regarding which area is recommended to stay during this festival season in Seville?

Many like to stay in the beautiful but quite touristy Santa Cruz area close to the Cathedral/La Giralda, Alcazar etc. http://www.andalucia.com/cities/sevi...osantacruz.htm

I nevertheless prefer to stay in the much more local feel area around the center of town a little north of Santa Cruz. The San Vicente/San Lorenzo area or just south of Alameda de Hercules is spot on in my opinion. 15 mins walk to the cathedral: http://www.aboutsevilla.com/sevilla/itinerary5.asp

Arenal, just west/north-west of Santa Cruz is also wonderful. In both these areas you find some of the best tapas bar/restaurants in town. http://www.sevillaonline.es/english/seville/arenal.htm

Here are 252 hotels in Sevilla by district and with lots of guest reviews: http://www.booking.com/searchresults...1;city=-402849

Last time in Sevilla I decided to try Puerta Triana on next visit, perfect location and next to one of my favourite tapas bars in town, El Cairo: http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/conf...FaItmAodI1MA2Q

El Cairo: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...Andalucia.html

El Cairo also runs a budget and seemingly great value hotel above the restaurant: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Andalucia.html

Azahar lives in Sevilla and has got excellent suggestions for tapas bars and restaurants by district: http://azahar-sevilla.com/sevilletapas/

And be sure to visit the vibrant Triana district just across the city river Guadalquivir, a cradle of flamenco culture. http://www.andalucia.com/cities/seville/triana.htm

Lots of flamenco bars and clubs here, and a perfect place to spend the evening and night (and of course even stay). Calle Betis along the river is a perfect place to start the evening. http://www.sevilla5.com/activities/goingout/betis.html

Three recommended places for flamenco/sevillanas:
El Rejoneo in C/Betis, 33 along the river. No need to come before midnight. Samara Amador, singer daughter of legendary dancer Manuela Carrasco often gets into action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPZT3ADgWsw

Casa Anselma, very popular with tourists but the atmosphere uses to be great: http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/gui...fe-detail.html

El Mantoncillo is a genuine flamenco bar where anything can happen. Here you can stumble upon great artists having a late night drink and doing some improvisations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtkqvASPgIY

Thank you so much again! I'm interetsed in staying in the San Vicente area since we are looking forward to experiencing everything local.

I checked the video of El Mantoncillo and like the place very much!

I feel that we are much more informed!

And I'm just wondering if there's any place that is not very safe and therefore we should avoid. My husband is all about wandering about and trying things local people do.

All these districts are generally very safe and there's people out and about here long into the night. But you are of course in a fairly big city so take the normal precautions.

In San Vicente I've stayed in the basic and good value Hostal Museo, close to the Fine Arts museum. Would definitely go back. Private bathroom, tv, safety box, air condition.

Tomorrow the 17th, Joaquin Grilo and company dance in wonderful Teatro Lope de Vega at 20:30. He is brilliant, and this could easily be one of the highlights of this Bienal as his performance together with now late Moraito was in the 2010 Bienal. Just very few tickets left up at the highest balcony, but usually it's possible to get hold of some extra tickets outside the venue for a few Euros more.
http://www.labienal.com/programa/la-mar-de-flemanco/

On the 20th there are two more dance performances that I can highly recommend (all "dance" performances also of course include the other two basic components of flamenco; song and guitar (and several other instruments are also more and more common)):
The premiere of fabulous dancer Rosario Toledo new performance in Teatro Central on the 20th. She's accompanied by powerful singer José Valencia (he's one of the absolute best in the difficult art of singing to flamenco dance) and one of the most talented up and coming flamenco guitar players Dani de Morón.
http://www.labienal.com/programa/ale...o-garca-lorca/
Sold out, but I'm sure you get tickets if you are prepared to pay 5-10€ extra.

Later in the night, at 23h, up and coming Paloma Fantova and Macarena Ramírez dance at the Teatro Alameda
http://www.labienal.com/programa/pal...carena-ramrez/
Still tickets left.

There are also top of the shelf performances every night in intimate Casa de la Memória in the midst of the Santa Cruz district. Popular with tourists, but this is the real deal. No drinks, no food, just an hour+ with great flamenco. Entrance 15€.

Program: http://www.casadelamemoria.es/eventos.htm

After midnight there are lots of flamenco/sevillanas clubs, especially in the Triana district - one of the most important cradle of the flamenco culture - across the city river Guadalquivir.

I like El Rejoneo in Calle Betis, 33. Here Samara Amador, singer daughter of legendary dancer Manuela Carrasco, often gets into action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPZT3ADgWsw

Anything can happen at El Mantoncillo in C/Alfarería, 104: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvAn_2j0LuY

And Casa Anselma in C/Pagés del Corro, 49 is an institution in town; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw1atBQq_u0

Here's also a fine guide to where planned things happen each day of the week (bars): http://www.sevillaflamenco.net/bares/
