Hi,
Does anyone know the best way to get from the Amalfi Coast to Venice? We fly into Rome, then will be staying in Positano, and would like to travel to Venice, and then go through Tuscany on my way back to Rome to fly home. Is there train service from the Amalfi Coast to Venice, or do I have to back-track through Rome again? How long of a trip is it?

From Naples to Venice is a 6-7 hour trip. Might consider an overnighter. You may go through Roma Termini station or perhaps through Bologna.

I haven't stayed in Positano but we have been to Sorrento.

I've always made sure to go from Venice to Naples and on to Sorrento rather than from South to North.

The reason is there's a sleeper train with no changes that goes from Venice to naples but for some reason not in the other direction.

From Positano I guess it becomes a hassle as there are no trains on the Amalfi Coast. You can take a boat to Salerno and then train from there or a bus to Sorrento and then the computer train to Naples. Or hire a car to take you to Naples.

I might be tempted to go through Tuscany from Rome and up to Venice then take the sleeper down to Naples and find my way to Positano. At the end make your way back to Rome.

You can train from Salerno or Naples to Venice.

To get to Salerno, you could take the ferry, or the SiTA bus, from Positano. The train station is about 3 blks NW of the ferry docks. The bus stops at the station.

Thanks for the info - I will check into those sites.
The problem is, we have to start our trip in Positano, then have time afterwards to venture off onto Venice and Tuscany. But, it doesn't sound like this will be easy if there are no direct sleepers to Venice from the Amalfi Coast...sounds like we'd end up in Venice either really tired, or waste an entire day of travel (neither sound that appealing). I would really be bummed if I missed Venice on my trip though...

We just did the opposite - Venice to Sorrento.

The long train ride was unappealing so we opted for a flight on Alitalia.

Flight was just over an hour and gave us full extra day on the Amalfi Coast.

If you check Alitalia for flights we found the flights to be much cheaper on their Italian sight than the american/english one.

I highy recommend this as an easy and short way to travel between the 2 areas.

We made this trip, and it wasn't too bad. We had a car that we rented out of Rome and drove to Positano. So when we moved from Positano to Venice, we drove the car back (approx 3 hrs), and then took the train from Rome to Venice. It was a long day, but to pass the time we took a bottle of wine and some food and had a picnic on the train. We loved Positano and Venice. It was our two favorite places in Italy. Enjoy your trip!

There are sleepers from Salerno to Venice, the 19:05 via Termoli, the 20:27 via Bologna, and the 01:19 direct.

The last has 1 and 2cl compartments.

The 19:15 train from Naples has 1 and 2cl compartments. It arrives at 05:24.

Last year, we rented a car in Sorrento, drove from there to Tuscany & stayed three nights, then drove from there to Venice where we dropped the car and stayed three nights. We flew out of Venice, but you can easily take a train from there back to Rome. If you're interested in the driving details, click on my name and locate my trip report Part 3.
