Best way to get from Montepulciano to Venice

I have a friend traveling to Italy and asked me if I knew the best way to get to Venice from Tuscany. I don't know so I thought I'd ask.

They have a car rental so they are wondering if they should drive to Venice from Montepulciano or if they should take the train.

If it's best to take the train, would Chiusi to Venice be the best option?

Drive 20 mins to Chiusi and take the train directly to the S. Lucia train station in Venice.

Is this going to be a day trip to Venice? If so they will find free on street parking if they turn left at the Chiusi train station and drive a few blocks toward the end of the street.

Assuming it is not a round trip -- in which case I would likely take the train:

1. If I already had a car, I would drive.

2. Look on mappy.com to determine times, tolls and so on.

3. I would also check into drop off charges. Hertz seems not to have a drop off charge for a Rome pick-up and a Venice drop off, which was the trip I contemplated. But to drop off in Chiusi might be another matter.

Hi mv,

If I already had a car I would drive to Venice and drop off the car at the Piazalle Roma.

If they are taking the train, they get off at San Lucia.

Thanks everyone! My friend decided to drive there instead of taking the train. (Venice is the last stop of their vacation so it's not a day trip ).
