car parking info/suggestions ourside Venice?
We are flying, in April, to Frankfurt and will drive to Munich (through Wurzburg,Rothenburg),, then to Salzburg. Will go on down to Venice for just ONE DAY and night. (been to Italy 4 times,always avoiding Venice, but want a quick "look"
.
Then on over to the Dolomites, Lake Guarda, and up to Innsbruck, Heidelburg ,Strasborg perhaps. QUESTION: Has anyone ever stayed at a hotel on the outskirts of Venice where they can also leave their car for a day. OR : what are the parking areas like on the outskirts, AND the price. I guess we COULD get a hotel in the center of Venice, moderate price not being a problem, and I do understand Venice is nicer in the evenings after the "day trippers" leave. But my main question is one of wanting an idea of a hotel "on land" with parking...away from the center. THANKS

There are many people on this board who drive, while I do not, but I think that I can say without fear of contradiction:
a) park your car near the Venezia Mestre station on the mainland (there are, as I understand it, parking lots with reasonable prices close to the station);
b) take the train to Venice itself (Venezia Santa Lucia) and, if you want to experience Venice at all, stay overnight in Venice itself.

I don't know if this is of any help to you, but we rented a placee inthe Veneto a few years ago and went into Venice about three times during our stay there. We left the car in the (free) lot at the train station in a small town about 15 minutes outside Venice. I forget the name of the town, but it was farther out than Maestre. It cost about $10 for the ride into Venice and back, but as I say it was a few years ago.
Why always avoiding Venice?

Park in Mestre outside the train station. It costs 4 euros per day. The train ride in takes 15 minutes and is very cheap. Spend the night in Venice. It is an unusual experience, if only because there is no loud traffic noise anywhere and there are no bright light areas as in other major cities.

Well, my typo error,,,the word is "OUTSIDE" Venice!
I knew my comment about avoiding Venice would bring some interesting responses!...but guess I am just "ornery". To each his own..right?, but one time won't hurt us and I know it will be beautiful, and we look forward to a short visit!
We've visited all countries in 'Europe, lived five years overseas (in West Africa and Lisbon) and travel twice a year back to Europe. (Paris 5 times, and have never been to the Louvre!) ....but I'll bet we have covered many more miles of countryside and quaint towns in the car than the average person.
ANYWAY...all this has nothing to do with my original question,(and I don't usually like to veer off the main topic)....Parking outside Venice, OR a hotel on the outskirts with free parking.??? Big THANKS to those who answered THAT question and we would appreciate any other ideas in regard to parking the car in Venice.!
