Best Rental Car?

I'm looking for a nice rental car to drive from Paris to Cannes and back from 12/3/99 to 12/8/99. Will spend as much as $500US (total). Any suggestions on worthy agents? If so, I'll need to know on-line url's or reservation phone numbers.

Regards,
Mike

We used Auto Europe in Italy. They had good prices in all car classes, including premium and luxury cars. I gather from other posters on this forum, that they are a good bet no matter which country. check out www.autoeurope.com.

Second the motion on Auto Europe (got a free upgrade when we rented in France this fall). Cars as promised; no waiting....

Mike, I concur with Auto Europe but why
not train to either Avignon or Nice and
get the car there? It is a long haul and
gas and tolls are not cheap. Your option
is Kemwel for best rates- www.kemwel.com

Mike,
I've rented from both Auto Europe and Kemwel and found them both to be excellent both from the standpoint of equipment and rental cost. I do second BOB's suggestion of train travel for the long haul followed by auto rental upon your arrival in Cannes.

Concur with train travel to Cannes. And unless you really have somewhere to go, what's the deal about a car when you get there?? Our first trip to that area, we never had a car and never felt constrained. But then we do a lot of walking. But trains take you to any nearby towns if you need to wander a bit.
AutoEurope (1-800-223-5555) or www.autoeurope.com

Works for us.

Just a thought? Why would you want to drive from Paris to Cannes and back in such a short time frame?

Hi Mike,
Just back from 3 week trip to Europe. We rented a car, for 5 days, with Auto Europe. Their customer service is great, but we did have one problem. We were picking up the vechicle in Maastricht, NL and had requested and paid for an Audi A4. We had been reassured by AutoEurope, after they had contacted the Avis office in Maastricht and Amsterdam, that they would be able to get the Audi from their fleet in Amsterdam, since they didn't have the Audi in Maastricht. As we had been weary of when we arrive in Maastricht they did not have the Audi. We got a Citroen Xantia, which was a nice ride, but still inferior to the Audi. I have spoken with a rep. from Autoeurope, who reassured me that we would receive a refund for the extra cost for the Audi from Avis. I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to see if they come through.

Anyways, the point being, they do not guarentee the make of car you request, so be careful of what you ask for.

We've used Hertz the two times we were in Europe in the last year and found their prices competitive with others. Their service was also good.
