It had been a goal of mine to visit the much talked about art deco toilet at Madeleine for a few years. I was crushed last year when I was finally able to get there to see it was locked up tight. Morale of the story? Don't put off important stuff!

I can't remember ever having an issue finding a toilet in Paris, free or not. Any time there is one convenient, I use it whether I think I need to or not.

I have not used the sanisettes yet. Not for any particular reason other than I haven't had the need.

I too always have change just in case.

There are decent public toilets outside Notre Dame -- as you are facing the front of the cathedral, there is a statue of Charlemagne on horseback to the right, with a staircase leading down to public toilets -- quite a good number of them. There is an attendant and you are expected to pay a few coins, but it is a decent facility and very convenient if you for sightseers on visiting Notre Dame or nearby Ile St. Louis.

Me, the OP, had to cancel our Paris trip so didn't have a chance to visit these facilities around the city. But keep writing tips because they can be useful to others and me as well when I have the chance to rebook our holiday.

I have never paid the attendant at the Notre Dame toilettes, or when I've used the dark green toilettes tucked away in the trees near the Grand Palais on the Champs-Elysees. The ladies might be hoping for tips, but there is no admission fee to use these public toilettes. The law states that there must be a sign posted outside, so you know that you must pay before you use the facilities.
