I am looking for hotel/apartment for 3 nights for Rome for July. We will need room for 2 adults and 2 children with private bath. Not concerned with anything fancy, just decent beds that are clean, and in an area that is safe. We will be visiting, the Colesseum, Trevi fountain, Catacombs, St Peters Square, Sistine Chapel, and bocca della verita. Not sure what else. Plan is to walk most of the day and metro, or bus home at the end of the night.
Any suggestions?

How old are your children and do they need separate beds/rooms? What do you want to spend? Keep in mind you will probably want air conditioning in Rome in July.

For three nights I probably wouldn't bother with an apartment, but if the budget is tight, you might want to look into some of the offerings from realrome.com and/or cross-pollinate.com. I've rented from both companies, and I think both offer some apartments for as few as three nights.

The boys are 13 and 11, so we would like to all stay in one room. I am looking to spend no more than $175 US dollars per night, and around $125 would be preferrable.

That is high season and a VERY low budget for Rome. Quads are not the easiest to come by in any case and your budget will be hard to achieve IMO.

Go to the Expedia website and input your details. All of the hotels with quad rooms or "family rooms" will pop up. You can then look at the hotels' own websites for more information.
Many hotels in Italy include breakfast with the room for no additional charge. This will help with your budget if you make sure you have selected one that does.
July is hot, make sure it is air conditioned. When you do find a hotel book right away as quad rooms are limited.

Several years ago we stayed at Hotel Genio right at Piazza Navona. We evnjoyed the hotel and the location was great.

We were a group of 6 couples and our rooms varied in size; however, a quad room should certainly be large.

We all enjoyed the rooftop terrace, too.

I have checked on venere.com and have found hotel rooms for between $135-$175 with good reviews, but it's hard to see some of these pictures and really tell locations.

You might try Villa San Pio on the Aventine Hill (www.aventinohotels.com). It's within easy walking distance of two metro stops (Circo Massimo and the Pyramide). You can walk to the Colesseum within 15 minutes. It's reasonably priced especially if you book in advance and the rooms are large. My family of 5 booked a triple and a double over Christmas for 200 Euros/night. The triple was huge and could easily accomodate a rollaway bed if the hotel does that.

Jennifer, why don't you post a few of the options that came up on Venere. That way you can get feedback from people who have stayed in them or have thoughts about location, amenities, etc.

They have fantastic reviews of Trip Advisor, and have a three night minimum. It's in Prati (near the Vatican). I'm staying there three nights in Sept 2011, and have had great communication with the owner.

I will suggest this apartment. I was looking at it for myself recently.The location is excellent within walking distance of most major attractions.It appears there is an extra bed in the master bedroom and the couch folds out to a bed too.

Leely2: Good idea. Here are some of the Venere.com options I am considering:

Also, breakfast would be nice, but most reviews I read state the breakfasts are meager, and often not on site - so we could certainly do without. Plus that gets us out the door a little earlier in the morning.

lv2travel1960: That looks like a great one! I will check into the availability for the days we need.

One thing I do notice about apartments, is that many require full payment in cash, and that many of the people you rent from don't speak english. We are working to learn some italian now, but I'm not sure how fluent or well we will be able to speak or understand when we get there.

One other thing to check on for an apartment is that there is often a large cleaning fee that you must pay.

We stayed at B&B Flavius. I am not sure if they do quad rooms, but it was 90 euros last summer for a double that included a decent breakfast.

For a quad room, in a good location, in summer, your budget is very tight. I had a lot of trouble finding a double for 90 euro in the summer of 2009. We did not do an apartment because of the cleaning fees (which don't matter if you stay a long time, but we only stayed 5 nights) and the fact it is hard to find reviews on them.

Jennifer, I don't think any of the five places you found on venere are particularly good locations.

Look at a map of central Rome and look at places WEST of Via del Corso all the way to the river. Very convenient to walking to tourists sites and a more charming area generally.

I think the budget hotel, Hotel Genio, mentioned above would be a great base and apparently they have quads.

You should also look at Google maps, at the large area I outlined above, and put "hotels" in the search box.

I did look at Hotel Genio, but it doesn't appear to be available for my dates of travel unfortunately.

I'm going to look into some of the other hotels that are listed with Hotel Genio. The prices are nice, and they seem like very nice hotels.

So, we changed our dates for Rome, and have the Hotel Genio booked! Very excited! Now all I have to figure out is the bus, and how much walking distance between things we want to see.
Any suggestions on a plan for Rome to see: Colesseum, St. Peters Square, Sistine Chapel, Catacombs, bocca della verita, and probably Trevi Fountain area.
