Best place to spend 1 night between Alba & Florence?

My husband and I are planning an October trip to Italy. Has anyone made the trip between Alba (near Asti) and Florence? We are trying to decide whether it is best to do it by car or by train. In either case, it looks like it might be a good idea to make a stop along the way. We have considered staying in Camoglia, but I think that it may be fully booked because of some sort of early-October regatta in Genoa? None of the hotels there have responded to my inquiries yet, so I'm not sure. We have also looked at Lucca & Pisa, but perhaps they are so close to Florence that they won't really break up the trip? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've only been to Italy once before, and that was a quick trip to Florence & Rome over 10 years ago. Thanks!

Hello Esther,

I'd suggest Santa Margherita Ligure, Camogli or Lucca.

Steve

If you decide for the car, you may consider spending this day in the Alpi Apuane area. The landscape is unique, with mountains of white marble partially excavated (this marble was used to build many of the monuments you can see in Italy) and lovely villages.
http://www.alpiapuane.com/English/indexeng.htm

Thank you for the suggestions, Steve, Alice & Bob! I'll have to look up a few of the places you mentioned.

I finally did get a positive response from one of the hotels in Camogli (Hotel Augusta), but it sounds like the town will be swarming with boaters on October 10. Since we were looking for a peaceful town, that may not be the place for us that weekend.
