We plan to be in Cordoba for a week; renting an apartment (thru AirBnB?). We hope to find one in a nice neighborhood, within walking distance of the train station (for excursions). We tend to have a relaxing vacation....cooking in our apartment, enjoying the ambience and sights, strolling the city in the evenings, heading out on an excursions, etc.
What might be the best neighborhoods or areas within Cordoba to rent such an apartment/flat/house?

'The bus station is opposite the train station, why no mention of bus, (but you do not say what you have in mind for these excursions).
The area by and near the train station is new build. Not sure what you want from 'nice'. Interesting based on 'ambience and sights' could be anywhere within the area bordered by Avenue de America/Ave de los Picaneros, the two parks/gardens starting just south of the station and the river.'

I would look for an apartment in the area near the Plaza de la Constitución, or around the Plaza de Colon.

We stayed in an airbnb apartment on Calle Ángel de Saavedra. The location was great with respect to being able to walk to all of the major sights and have a choice of great restaurants close by. We were also close to a supermarket to by supplies.

This location is not within walking distance of the train station but we just took a quick taxi to the apartment. I would prefer to stay closer to the sights and restaurants than the train station, which really isn't within walking distance to much.

We do prefer staying somewhere that is quiet and with an old town feel or ambience. It sounds like we'll have to balance that with closeness to train and bus terminals. Our plan is to enjoy the small city of Cordoba, while taking a few day trips to places like Montoro and Montilla.

(I should have realized if I am checking both Fodor's and Rick Steves forums, then others would be too)

I google mapped the walking distance between the location of the apartment we stayed in to the train station - it looks to only be a 15 minute walk. When I mentioned it was not walkable from the train station previously, that was with our luggage. That location certainly could be walkable for a day trip or a short, inexpensive taxi ride away.

Just to put the location of our apartment in perspective for your comparison purposes, the terrace of our apartment overlooked the Mezquita, which was lovely to take in both day and night. We were right on the edge of the Jewish quarter for strolling. The river and bridges were about a 5 - 7 minute walk through the Jewish quarter. The Alcazar and gardens were just less than a 10 minute walk away.

Plaza de las Tendilas, where the tourist information is located, was also only a 5 minute walk.

We were fortunate to find an apartment in a quiet compound. We were able to escape to a quiet retreat whenever we needed to.

We loved our too short visit of 2 days in Cordoba. I'm sure you'll enjoy your week there.

Montoro perhaps but Montilla I wonder why, unless for a visit to Alvear or the other winery which I forget at the moment. If the winery, be sure to book.

I especially like the local atmosphere "Roman Córdoba" around central Plaza de las Tendillas and the Plaza-Mayor-in-Madrid-like Plaza de la Corredera. Genuine and affordable tabernas on every corner. Sure you will have a great stay in a fabulous city. Outside the Mezquita area, Córdoba is less touristy than Granada and even Sevilla, and you can easily get a very pleasant and laid-back Andalucian feel for life here. There are perhaps no better place in Andalucía to reflect upon what this very special and almost mythical region is and how it developed.

Few other cities in Europe beats the history of Córdoba, from Roman Corduba to the capital of Muslim al-Andalus after 766 AD, and then through Christian times after the 1236 reconquista capture and eventual steep decline. Córdoba was the most advanced city in Europe during caliphate times about 1000AD, some 500 000 inhabitants, and a great cultural, political and economic centre with 300 public baths and the greatest library in the world.

I have visited Córdoba in relation to magnificent theater performances, ended up in never to forget flamenco nights, had some of the best no fuss meals ever and met brilliant people. Perhaps the best description would be to say that Córdoba - outside the absolute most beaten track - is a place where Andalucía just tend to happen.
