Gulia, I loved your report on the Chiado neighborhood in Lisbon. May I ask which hotel did you stay?
I am planning a one week trip the first week of October! I am so excited! It will be my first time in Portugal!
I won't have a car and can't walk much more than a mile or so, so it would be great to be in a neighborhood that has a social life. I know I can take public transportation and cabs and will do that, too, but to have some social life right there should be wonderful! Though I am not that much into the shops.
Does anyone have any suggestions beyond Gulia's good experience...?

I love this thread - thank you everyone for the detailed suggestions! GiuliaPiraino I love that you've come back and told us about your trip! I'm currently looking at Baixa based on the suggestions here, can not wait to see Lisbon!

Mind if I tag along? I'm reading about all the different neighborhoods in Lisbon mentioned in the above posts and am now wondering if I made the right decision by booking this hotel:
Hotel Mundial, Praça Martim Moniz 2, 1100-341 Lisboa.
When I looked it up on Google Maps it seemed the right part of Lisbon, a few minutes walk from metro Rossio. Second reason: it has a roof terrace, perfect for pre-dinner sundowners we are hoping. Now I'm slightly wondering.
The trip is planned for early April and of course I'm hoping that we'll be lucky with the weather.

Just found this site and very helpful. My husband and I are in the process of reserving an Air BnB for a six night stay prior to embarking on a cruise from Lisbon in May. We are in our late 60s. we will not have a car, will rely on public transportation. Any Airbnb specific property recommendations?

This thread has been resurrected after almost 8 years of hibernation, And why not...
A few months ago we stayed in a property through www.housetrip.com, similar to what AirBnB has become (no more air mattresses on the floor...). We have used that website for vacation properties on several continents, to good avail. It is now part of Tripadvisor, but still under its own website.
Our property was in Belém, a part of Lisbon that - as it turned out when we got there - has enough items of interest to keep you sightseeing for days, on foot no less, before even going into the rest of Lisbon. Fabulous!
Now I'm not saying it is - to quote the header - "the best neighborhood", people disagree a lot on where it is "best" to stay. But Belém is on bus and tram lines to Praça Figueira or Cais do Sobre, two hubs where you catch trains and metro and other buses, and it worked very well for us.
You'll get the card for public transport, which is easy and frequent, buses, trams, metro, trains - see www.carris.pt/en/buslines/ and
www.metrolisboa.pt/eng/ and www.lisbon.net/transportation and http://lisbon-portugal-guide.com/lis...ram-guide.html
So whether you end up staying in Belém or not, check out what's on offer there at

I've just got back from Portugal, and spent a week in Lisbon and the second in Porto. (trip report to follow - some photos here https://goo.gl/photos/cmDt5xSZZV3q5RpK7)
When I booked, I'd debated over several locations, Belém being one of them. After spending some time there, I am sure we would have enjoyed it, but I think if I returned, I would stick to Alfama where we rented a small, inexpensive apartment.
michelhuebeli's thread above is spot on regarding public transport and the "zapping" card - it is quick, reasonably prices, and regular.

Belem is Lisbon itself the way Parque Naçoes is Lisbon itself. Both are kms away from central downtown, which I think is what the poster meant. Not saying that they are bad places to stay, just that if you want to be in central Lisbon, neither of those places is for you.
