Best location to stay in Paris for New Year's Eve

We are going to be in Paris 30 December through 2 January and want to stay where they'll be either great places to celebrate. Are there fireworks? Other celebrations that are worth being around? I don't want to run around across the city on that night.

Hi mulva, I am going to be there as well for 10 days with my son and grandson (4 yrs old). I have rented us an apartment on Rue Clér so that we can walk to the Eiffel Tower and back to watch the fireworks. My nephew was there last year and advised us to avoid riding the metro back as it gets very crowded!

Definitely plan on walking that night...if you are looking for a place to stay this NYE, I would advise you to get on that ASAP!

Thanks all. I've decided to go the more traditional Parisian route and avoid the ET area altogether. We're staying in the Marais, which we've done before. Still working on reservations for dinner that night, I know I'm running short on time for that too.

We will be there as well this NYE, staying in an apartment next to Pompidou Center! Cocktails and heavy apps at 7 and on the street at 10...should be a grand evening!

Does anyone have an opinion if it would it be wrong to wear Venetian masks while roaming on the streets of Paris NYE???

There are no fireworks.

New Year's revelers can wear whatever they want, but most people have no special paraphenalia.

The metro will have partial service all night and will operate free of charge from 17:00 on the 31st until noon on the 1st.

The main celebratory crowd is on the Champs Elysées, which will be closed to traffic. The crowd can vary from 300 to 800 thousand depending on the weather. It used to get dangerously rowdy, but there are now enough police for things to remain extremely peaceful.

Secondary crowds hang out at the Eiffel Tower and Sacré Coeur. The Eiffel Tower crowds are always the ones the most disappointed by the evening because about 75% of the people are expecting fireworks, but all they will see are personal roman candles and a few dinky rockets.

I keep forgeting there are no fireworks in Paris... But that is OK, just being there will be super! Last year I was at Copacabana beach in Rio for New Year's and it was marvelous! This year will be a big change: cold weather instead of warm, wearing black instead of white (that is what you wear in Brasil), and great champagne for affordable prices (I hope)!

We just decided to go to Paris for NYE and decided to stay at the Hotel Francois 1er. It is located 2 short blocks from both the Champs d E. and the Seine.

For Kerouac,

Is it possible to get into cafes on the Champs Elysees on a walk in basis between 9:00 and 12:00 pm?

Thanks

Hotel Elysees Union between the Champs and Trocadero is great and reasonably priced.

Hotel Ascot at the Opera is also nice and in a convenient location.

In the same area, classic in style and more expensive, Hotel Athenee is also a fabulous hotel (not to confuse with Hotel Plaza Athenee which is even more up-market).
