I have read up on food in Rome, and I know to avoid eating in places near the tourist spots, and to eat in places called Trattoria (family run restaurants).

I know that this board is mainly for people with fairly large budgets, but I am looking for a few places to eat where I can get an excellent meal for under 10 Euro.
I have heard about a good place for vegetarian food in Rome. La Carbonara in Campo d?Fiori. I hear that the self help antipasto costs about 10 Euro for all you can eat and fantastic quality.
Also I hear Ican get great pizza at Pizza San Calisto, which is located in the Trastevere section of Rome.

Do any of you have any other specific places where I can get great food at bargain prices? I know it is hard to find, but there are always lists for Paris, but I haven?t seen any for Rome.

Mario's on via del moro in trastevere. It's the real think (and very inexpensive). I was taken there more then 20 years ago by local. I miraculously found it again 20 years later while visiting with my family. We went on a friday night. The place was packed with local families.

I think just about anywhere in Trastevere would be a good place to start...you can stroll down the main streets and look at the menus..better yet.. look AT what people are eating (if they're outside) then pick a place and be adventurous.
Just to help clear up what I feel might be a few "misconceptions"...don't fool yourself by thinking that no place near a "tourist spot" cannot be good...and believe me, this board is NOT just for people with "fairly large budgets" some of the people here will fly a million miles to save a dime and don't even THINK about getting some of them to tip you for anything...LOL.

So, go to Trastevere and as far AWAY from the Spanish Steps as possible and just pick a place... if you want to eat in what many feel is the "real" Rome. Enjoy.

Although "best inexpensive quality restaurant in Rome" seems to me to be an oxymoron, I suppose you have some kind of standards in mind by which to judge what is "best" or "quality" or "inexpensive." From your statment, your only standard from which we can make recommendations is price -- under 10 Euro. Then you mention "great pizza" which right away begs the question of whether it is "quality" food. And "self help antipasto" doesn't give anyone much of a clue as to what you are really searching for, other than low cost.

So based on your obvious desire for low cost, I would advise you to take the comments of Bootman to heart. And you will probably do just fine by wandering around any part of Rome and looking for a crowded restaurant. If it's crowded, it is good food at a reasonable price. Hopefully, that will meet your criteria.

FWIW, my favorite pizza in the world is to be found at Pizzaria Remo in Testaccio. Take the Metro to Piramide and ask anyone for directions. It rocks nightly.

Another vote for Mario's in Trastevere.

For lunch, there's a wonderful place a bit north of Piazza Venezia, on the west side of Via del Corso, called the Antica Tavola Calda del Corso.

For a great restaurant, I mean good food, inexpensive and a convivial atmosphere, try the 'La Sagra del Vino' on Via Marziale #5, close to the Vatican.

They are closed Sunday and only open for dinner. You will need reservations as they have two 'seatings' at specific times. They will give everyone several choices for the main course and deliver it by table all at one time.

We spent eight days in Rome and this was our best meal and we didn't have a bad one that I remember.

For great lunches, try the "ALLA RAMPA" which is right next to the spanish steps. It's a fun place and very busy at lunchtime. It has an incredible antipasti buffet for a very reasonable price. It closes at 3 PM for 2 or 3 hours.
