Best Day Trips from Rome and Paris

What are your favorites? I am looking for one or two half day or day trips from each city and am trying to eliminate all of the possibilities. Have only been to Versailles before and really loved it. Any thoughts?

What is there to see at all of these places? And do trains run to all of these places?

You might think about going to a Library and getting some books on the places suggested. If you have to ask what is there to see at D-Day beaches, Fountainbleau, Chartres, Assisi, Pompei, etc. you really need help badly.

Re Paris, I also vote for Giverny, Chartres, and will add Vaux-le Vicomte.
I have some info on these in my Paris notes; if you would like them feel free to email me
Good luck
