First check a map of the UK - places like Liverpool are really too far for a day trip from London - it is at the other end of the country.

A few places that make more sense for a day trip are Bath, Dover, Oxford, Cambridge, etc. But there are many other good destinations. York is doable but it would be a looong day. It takes about 2.2 hours to get to York from London. Also a lot depends on the time of year - in summer it is daylight until very late while in winter is gets dark before 4PM.

Windsor is a great day trip.
Another is to take the train to Canterbury in the morning, see the cathedral, take the train on to Dover, see the castle there and the cliffs. Return to London in the evening.
I also like Brighton and the Brighton Pavillion, but sometimes I think I'm in the minority there.

Liverpool is doable on a day trip from London (I do it a lot). But the fares structure makes it preposterously expensive by train, and it's a sod of a car journey (3-3.5 hours each way early on a Sunday morning: around 6 on a wet weekday. If you know the short cuts out of London)
But part of the point of Liverpool is its exuberant pub and club culture, for which an overnight is pretty much essential. And the roundabout car route from London, through your choice of Windsor, Oxford, Cotswolds, Statford, Warwick, can be scenic in parts - and is a lot less stressful than the direct route.
So a great choice for a two day trip.

The tours (I took one in September 2000) are led by a Beatle nut and author of at least one book about them; you get to see lots of sites in London where the Beatles did this or that, and one of the tours ends up at Abbey Road.

You could take the Beatles London walk or do the following yourself: Journey to the Abbey Road striped street crossing. Abbey Road striped street crossing A three-block straight walk southwest on Grove End Road from the St John?s Wood tube station. #3 Abbey Road is the recording studio, not open to the public. There's nothing much to see at the street crossing except the graffiti-ed street sign, but it was a pleasant little jaunt.
