Best Bits Of Hadrian's Wall/ Roman Forts

Hi everyone,

We will be travelling from Bakewell to Edinburgh via Carlisle and intend on trying to see some of the wall and Roman forts along the way.

I was thinking of Birdoswald, Vindolanda and Housteads(?)
Or are there other suggestions?

Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks Deb

Housteads is good. It's also a nice place to walk along the wall for a while.

Housesteads to see the Wall itself, which is very close to the museum there.

Vindolanda (although not directly on the Wall) to get the most detailed information on Roman daily life, and some amazing artefacts.

Birdoswald is rather small beer by comparison. However, you would have to pass it to get to or from the others if you're travelling via Carlisle anyway. One thing of note is an (ahem) good-luck stone in the Wall a few hundred yards to the east of the museum:

Fantastic love the good luck sign might need it. (not literally)
Seems we are on the right track.
I am going to have to move to the UK I reckon as it is torture doing all this culling.

Thanks Deb

1. Housesteads
2. For something totally untouristed, checkout the Mile Castle at Gilsand (sp?)
