I would recommend the Marais for you. I've stayed in that area twice, while the last time we stayed in the 6th, we walked back over to the 4th (the Marias) to get back to our old haunts - like the famous inexpensive falafel place on Rue du Rosiers. What I like about the 6th, is the proximity to Luxembourg Gardens, but for a short trip of 2 nights - you won't have the lounge/down time to hang out there every day.
I think the shops in the Marais are more interesting for someone of your age, and I love all the people walking around. The streets are narrower and lots of pedestrians.
That's my two cents!
Either one is great, perhaps go with the best hotel rate/location for your budget.

My last 3 times in Paris were apartment rentals... 1st in the Marais, then I tried St Germain des Pres, then I went back to the Marais... I much prefer the vibe there... and it is close enough to everything.
Glad you eliminated Montmartre. It's great for a visit, but way to far if you have only a couple days.

I think the areas sure have something to do with your age, I wouldn't recommend some young person go stay in the 16th or 7th, for example.
I agree with the Marais over St Germain, also, in your case.
