Bernina Express, Car and Luggage, Base town?
We will have a rental car for our 3 week vacation in September and October trip through Austria and Switzerland. We will probably fly into and out of Frankfurt or Munich so as to spend some time with our German friends.
At some point we would like to do the Bernina Express or at least a part of it. Having the rental car I am assuming we will need to do a round trip?
Where would you base a stay in order to ride the BE, and return to the same spot that afternoon/evening?
Obviously we would need a place close to the station.
Some people have mention Chur, but I haven't been able to find many recommendations for a nice place to stay. St Moritz sounds a little glitzy and maybe too large for our taste.
Pontresina?

Hi,
Recommendations -- you mean for a hotel? I stayed in Zuoz, which is a nice idea for a base, but it's awfully small. I stayed at (and liked immensely) the Posthotel Engiadina.
We passed through Pontresina when we went on the Bernina Express, and I remember thinking what a lovely town it is. It's larger than Zuoz with more hotel and nightlife options. There is an interesting little nest of hiking trails at the bottom of the hill below the town.
No hotel recommendations for Pontresina.
Sorry you'll have the car.
