Berner Oberland Help!
We will be in the Berner Oberland for 4 nights beginning June 20,2002. Our plane arrives in Zurich at about 4 pm. We were thinking of taking the train immediately to the BO-Murren. Will it be difficult to do so this late in the day? How long will the trip take. Once we arrive at Interlaken, what action do we take? Will Murren be an inconvenient location to see other parts of the BO such as Grindewald and Wengen? Will it be possible to do day trips to Murten or the French Switz area? Is the Murten area preferable to Zermatt? We are thinking of a Train/Drive pass as we will be visiting other areas...Will the funiculars and cable cars get costly this way? Suggestions? we have never been in this area so any advice will be greatly appreciated!
PJ

For starters, you will find lots of good information at www.twenj.com - - or maybe Ed himself will answer some of your questions.

Best wishes,
I recommend Wengen as the most convenient location. No cars, as in Murren, but getting to Murren adds quite a bit of travel time due to the slow funicular.

Wengener Hof is a fine hotel and a good bargain, I have stayed there the last two years.

Wengen/Oberland area is better for hiking than Zermatt, is more generally rural and relaxing. Zermatt has fancier hotels (Alpenhof highly recommended).

Check out www.sbb.ch for train times; I'm pretty sure it can be done, and the train leaves from the Zurich airport. The last legs from Interlaken are timed, with the trains waiting for you. Many confusing purchase options; the lifts and cog railways in the Oberland are quite expensive, but you can buy a 5-day pass when you get there; or you get some percent off if you have some other railways -- try www.jungfraubahn.ch

If you can walk at all don't miss the Eiger Trail

I don't know where you're flying from, but personally,I'd spend the night in Zurich before going to the Berner OBerland, unless you're flying from. Wengen is more convenient to Grindlewald and is as charming as Murren. If you need to choose between Murten and Zermatt, Murten is a lovely, small walled town and will be more inexpensive.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice! We appreciate it! I am sure I will be back for more info as I get further into this. By the way, we have been advised to rent a car in Switz before we enter Italy. The suggestion was Brig or Lugano. We will be most likely heading to Cinque Terre area. Does anyone know how long a drive this would be?
By the way, ttt obviously did not fully read both of my posts! Look before you speak!
PJ
