Berlin or Munich - need suggestions

Hi fellow travelers,

I have heard nothing but all good things about Germany. It has always been a dream destination ever since. Now, since I have a chance to spend some time - only 4 days I am confused between the south and the north. Should I go to Berlin or should I go to Munich and Bavaria?

I am more interested in landscapes than monuments, but then I do have interest in the World War memorials. Could anyone help me out of my misery

Cheers !!

OK - why not do both? Even if you only go for a week you could get a good taste of both. 3 days in Berlin and 3 days in Munich. Then save up your euros and come back for more.

Personally I love the Bavarian side but would have to agree that there is a lot to see elsewhere.

Munich is one of my favorite cities in Europe. The feel of Bavaria and Austria are more homey to me,the land and mountains more beautiful than the north.
I find Berlin too hectic and modern for my taste, but I am a geezer.

The Idea is good, but I have constraints that can't extend the duration. May be I can plan for a next trip to see the other side (the one that I don't see now). So you suggest Bavarian side?

Ok. So Munich it is . Now comes the next part - can I do camping in the country sides? Are their dedicated campsites like other countries in Europe or I can camp anywhere?

There are dedicated campsites like in any other country I know. Free camping is not allowed - I think you can only do that in Scandinavian countries.

Munich Walk Tours does a 2.5 or 3 hour "Third Reich Tour" that you may find interesting. It costs 10 euro and ours was led by an American expat. They do have a website. You don't have to pre-book the tour, you can just show up and pay at that time.

4 days? Go to Berlin, there is enough to keep you busy for 4 days.

If you camp then you have to commute from campsite into the city back again etc. Pick one thing and go for it.

I'm a big Berlin fan, but Munich and environs for four days will be a great introduction to Germany and will leave you wanting to come back for more.

If you have only 4 days, my idea would be simply to stay in Munich and maybe make a day trip or two to the sights in Southern Bavaria. Unless camping is your favorite thing to do, it seems like the limited time frame would speak to constraining your travel scope a bit.

Thanks all for sharing your views. I am driving down from Paris to Munich. So I think commute should not be a problem from the campsites. I chose Munich (bavaria) for its landscapes. Anything specific I should not miss out when I am there ??
