We stopped for a few hours driving from Lake Garda to Bellagio. Ignore the main part of the city and head to the old city up on the hill. Yes, it is worth a stop. Some really beautiful buildings and charming shops and restaurants, yet minimally "touristy".
We had a spectacular lunch and wished we could have stayed and spent the night at Agnello D'Oro, but Bellagio was calling to us.

Hi Vic,

We'll be spending one night in Bergamo on the way back from Bellagio in early April.

Here's a link to a site which might help;

As Patrick says, the old part of the city up on the hill, the Citta Alta, looks especially inviting & the "Virtual Tour" section of the site I've quoted will give you a good flavour of the city.

We spent the night here before flying to London. We loved it and would go back. The old city is wonderful, take the funicular up. There is also a wonderful play area in the main part of the city if any parents with children venture there.

We spent a couple of nights at the Agnello D'Oro some years back and really enjoyed walking around the Citta Alta, particularly during the misty early mornings and in the evenings. Definitely worth a stop IMO, but it does seem a little far afield for a day trip from Venice if that's what you mean by "going from Venice."
