Berchtesgaden: The Salt Mine Or?

August timeframe

We will have a car (coming from Prien and eventually driving to Oberammergau later in the afternoon)

We have decided not to repeat the Eagles Nest Tour (which is great IMO..at least it was when we did it before) because of timing issues

We've done the boat trip on the Konigsee

Skipping Salzburg (been there, done that, several times)

I did the salt mine 40 years ago (literally) and we've decided perhaps to repeat that...

Unless someone here has some other fab suggestion and it does NOT have to be in Berhtesgaden, either) for which i am definitely all ears and as usual, thanks in advance.

I did the Berchtesgaden salt mine a couple of years ago and thought it was a really neat tour. They do a laser light show in the mine that I thought was pretty cool and the slide down to the lower level is a lot of fun. If the last time you did it was 40 years ago you may want to visit it again. I doubt they did the laser show back then.

And if you have a car you might want to then head out to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and visit the Zugspitze. If the weather co-operates you might be able to get to the top!

Have fun!

Thanks for your reply. I should have said I have also been to Garmisch and on this trip we'll be spending several days in Switzerland where I usually gor for my "mountain fix."

We hads thought about the water park at Bad Tolz, too...

Yes, we didn't even have lasers back in 1970..well if we did, we didn't know about them and I distinctly remember going down those slides which was fun so perhaps we made the "right" decision after all.

Again, thanks for posting and for the update...much appreciated.

Berchtesgaden salt mine - one of my favorite travel things we have done. Suppose you have been to all the castles in that area.

Thanks, Brats...
yes we have been to all four of the Ludwig "builds" in the past and the day before the salt mine we will have re-visited Herrenchiemsee.

We are fortunate in that just being in the general area and taking our time will suffice. If it were't for the dinner seating in our Oberammergau hotel (part of the Passion Play package) we would probably have done the Eagles Nest Tour again; we enjoyed it a great deal when we first did it a few years ago.

I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

The last time I was at Berchtesgaden, I took a tour of the bunker system. I recall that there was also a museum that dealt with WWII, but I didn't get to see as much of it as I wanted. There's a minibus tour company near the train station. I'd been to Berchtesgaden in the past, and as far as I know, the bunker tour was not available then.

I found it very interesting.

That minibus tour company is the one which is running the more or less "only authorized" Eagles Nest tour which includes the bunkers...the one we took several years ago. Thought the tour was very well done and it was extensive (lasts about four hours)..worthwhile if one has an interest in that sort of thing I think.

We also first did the Salt Mine in November 1970 when I was stationed in the Army in Stuttgart. Have done it two more times with friends on trips back in 1993 and 1997. Enjoyed it again both times and it was fun watching the couple we were with do it for the first time. I say go for it!

The bunker tour is interesting. The one we did was underneath the General Walker Hotel. This was used by our military in the 1970s. I was sad to see the old Berchesgardener Hof hotel was being torn down on our last trip through in 2007. It was a great old place, had some WWII history attached and was also used by the US military after the war. They probably have a new place built by now.
