Opps, I posted the picture link before I could expain it! Here a few pictures of the Benussi sobe we stayed at, just outside the Pile Gate in Dubrovnik a couple of weeks ago. We stayed in their smallest double room, cost €50 for 2 people. They also have a larger double room and 2 apartments. We used their terrace in the evenings for drinks! One apartment has it's own seperate small private terrace. This sobe is only a 2 minute walk from the Hilton, right outside the Pile Gate. Their e-mail contact is [email protected] or www.dubrovnik-online.com/apartments_benussi/

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this and your previous comments. We've booked one of the apartments for 5 nights in September and are really looking forward to it. It's nice to hear the positve comments and see the pictures. Jadranka seems very nice and she happily answered my many questions. She even took pictures of the apt's terrace for me to get a better idea.
Your posts have been helpful for our upcoming trip. Thanks again!

You're welcome Jana! Jadranka is truly friendly and open, and it was touching listening to her experience during the war with small children. They are so happy to be moving forward. Her son is taking classes to go into tourism also. He wants to come to the U.S. for training after school.
She showed us your apartment while we were there. It was so nice and large, with a stone wall behind the bed I think. The woodwork is really nice, her husband did all of it himself. We just loved the excellent a/c. It was so hot while we were in Dubrovnik, and it was good to come "home" to a cool room! The breakfast pastries at the grocery store (right were the motercycles park) outside of the Pile Gate, are much better than those at the bakery. They also have great cheese at this store!
Have a great trip! We already miss Croatia and have only been home less than a week

The stairs aren't steep at all. They are very wide also. The sobe isn't in the old town, but just a bit outside of the Pile Gate. You would walk to the entrance of the Hilton, where there is a small car drive up area. From there you'll see an alley way going slightly uphill. Follow it to the top (not steep) then turn left. You walk about 3 minutes up the wide stairs and their home is on the left side. They have a Dark Green door! The only thing uncomfortable about the walk is that with a suitcase, you have to pick it up at each step, instead of rolling it the whole way!
We were 100% satisfied with our stay there. I know that the deposit situation in Croatia can be an issue. I'm planning another trip now, and the homeowners take their deposit by using PayPal. This might be something to mention to the Benussi's. It'd be so nice if this practice would be more widely used.
Have a great time!

kathrynj - Just wanted to add that we stayed in Apt 2 for 5 nights in September and loved it. I think you've made a great choice staying with the Benussi's. The terrace that the apt's share is really beautiful (it's a great place to have breakfast) and our apartment was spacious and very tastefully decorated. As Images2 has pointed out, the location is great too. You'll love Dubrovnik!

Apt 1 will be great and probably the better value. Apt 2 is slightly bigger I think and has a private balcony in addition to the shared terrace with apt 1 but we used the shared terrace a lot more because it has a better view. If I were going back, I'd probably save a bit and book apt 1.
You'll have a great time!
