Ben Haines - Funeral details

Thank you all for your kind words in the previous thread. A veteran Fodors user suggested that I put these details on a separate post, so here goes:

Tuesday, April 17 at 10.30 am at St Catherine's, 102 Pepys Road, London SE14, cremation at Honor Oak Crematorium at 12.15, and buffet lunch at St Catherine's about 1pm.

All are very welcome.

The nearest train station is New Cross Gate, which is a 10 minute walk away. New Cross Gate is, in turn, 10 minutes on the train from London Bridge. If you need any further details, just email me.

What sad news. Please accept my condolences.

Are there any charities that would be appropriate to donate to in memory of your uncle?

Topping for those who can make it on our behalf.

And thank you Tim for sharing small tidbits of your uncle with us.

Charley, you may want to read this profile of Ben's parish church, http://www.southwark.anglican.org/br...003/page07.htm Ben is quoted in it. Given that the church is not financially well off, I wouldn't be surprised if Ben would approve of donations to it.

Oh No! I am so sad to red of Ben's passing. He recently sent me information to make my trip to London a memorable one. He doesn't even know me and yet he went to such trouble. I do pray for his family. Thanks for sharing the information with his on-line family.

I will check out the efficacy of my new XETrade account with a check to St. Catherine's.

Great idea ron.

Correct me if this is not proper, if I may mention that Church St.Catherine's has been having Church Roof Appeal for several years, the donation will be named on the slats. For details, please check: www.thehill.org.uk.

Ben will be sorely missed.

My father was a physical chemist, Ph. D. from Stanford. He told his students that we are where we are in knowledge because we stood on the shoulders of giants.

Well, I got to where I wanted to go via train more than once because I was able stand on the shoulders of a travel giant who dispensed information with a demeanor unmatched on this forum.

I cannot think of anyone who made more friends among people he never met than Ben Haines.

I was not fortunate enough to meet Ben in person, but that did not alter the quality or the accuracy of his information and advice. When Ben wrote, wise people read carefully what he had to say.

I'm so incredibly sorry, he mentioned that he was having mobility problems when I asked if we could meet for a drink next time I came through London.

He was so helpful for my first trip to London last year, gave me wonderful personalized tips in relation to my research interests, such a thoughtful and learned person. I'm so very sad we never got to meet.

He will be deeply missed by the countless people on this board that he so selflessly helped.

Thanks Judy and Ron. Indeed it looks as if the church would be very appropriate to donate to, seeing as Ben was the Churchwarden for many years.

"some folks good deeds live on after them or some folks good words live on after them" - I don't know the exact quotation - but in the case of Ben, i only know from his Fodor's posts that his good words and genuinely-only-helpful posts, loaded with just totally objective facts and NO attitude, will live on after him!

If anyone has the relevant posting for his amazing critiques and recommendations of London pubs please copy it here - i'd like to top it periodically to keep Ben's words alive!

Ben- so non-judgemental and strictly seeking to help others! He will be missed and Bravo to Dukey for taking the time to collectively represnt Fodorites. Much admired!
