Be wary of Harrod's..$$$££££

We are here in England at the moment and feel really robbed. My sister said eat at Harrod's it's great. Well stupid me, didn't do my research and paid 40£ for lunch of salad and crab cake. Turns out there are many restaurants/cafes within Harrod's. The shoes are great to look at, but not over $100 for lunch. Just be careful. Outside the store were many lovely cafes with menus of about 10£ per person 15£ with wine. I sure wish I would have read a thread like this before going to Harrod's.

A sick display by a sad, delusional man.

Yes, I didn't think anyone on Fodors could be taken in by such a display of bad taste.

Poor old Mohamed has been trying to get a British passport for years, all to no avail. He bought Harrods, a Scottish castle, Fulham FC, and Ritz Hotel, hoping that would bring him acceptance into British society. No such luck. The idea that Diana would marry Dodi, and that Mohamed would then be step-grandad to the future King of England is absurd. Mohamed firmly believes it though, hence the memorial.

Harrod's was expensive back in the old days when the exchange rate was at least somewhat reasonable. I even use to have a coffee, smoothie or lunch and have even made a few purchases. However, for the past several years, I only look.

Hey, everybody it's really simple. Whatever it is in £s; it's a bit more than twice that in dollars!

Even Diana did her shopping down the street at Harvey Nick's.

Think of it as part of your London experience. The seafood bar at Harrods is great. The bouillabaisse is a nice treat after a long flight and the brown bread with butter makes it extra nice.

I hope you had a good time in London.

Harrods is NOT a tourist trap. As you noted - they have many different places to eat - at different price points. But - it IS an upscale store - and nothing will be cheap.

This is like going to Saks and complaining they charge more than K Mart. What in the world did you expect?

(And if the lunch is good - and given the rate of exchange - $100 isn't that much for lunch. Have often had lunches in NYC that cost that and more - and were well worth it.)

Did you even look at the menu before sitting down? Really - you need to take some responsibility for your own decisions - not blame the store.

It Harrods, not Harrod's--no appostrophe, sweetie darling. You couldn't be that naive; Harrods is one of the world's most exclusive department stores. Of course it is expensive. Didn't your menu have prices?

Once, years ago, I said to my Aunt Pat of Old Windsor, "Aunt Pat shall we take some tea at Harrods?"

She replied, "ABSOLUTELY NOT! For what Harrods charges for tea, I could buy a case of Champagne."

Just stick to buying fridge magnets and jam spoons in the basement, sweetie.

You have to forgive Mr. Fayed. I am sure the loss of his son has done terrible things to his mind. My own mother and step-father were killed in a car crash, so I have a lot of sympathy for him.

nytraveler.. We had lunch at Sparks steak house in NYC. T-bone steak with all the trimmings and rack of lamb with all the trimmings plus iced tea and one slice of cheese cake shared.. total tab.. $101.56 including tip! I don't know where you eat but Sparks is a pretty fancy place. Where do you eat in NYC that costs $100.00 for a salad and a crab cake?

Harrods is an incredibly interesting store. One thing that absolutely galls me is the "luxury" bathrooms one must pay a pound to use. I'm used to having to pay for public restrooms in Europe but what is now $2.00 to pee is more than I can bare. And I must admit I did fall for it(in 2000) and for the record....they're no better than a very nice bathroom at Nordstrom's, and those are free!

The Harrods sale that just ended on Saturday was very good although very crowded. The memorial is tasteless IMO! "Killed on August 31..." Just awful!

The food court is okay for a quick bite . There is Cafe Rouge ( although a chain) around the back of H which has great food and a waiter to boot for less.

Afternoon tea at Harrods. No way. There are so many more famous and wonderful places to have tea that are less or the same price and better. Try Brown's since it has been redone or Savoy after you have escaped sight seeing in Covent Garden and Trafalger Square.

if you had actually BOUGHT something (and had a receipt) that pee wouldn't have cost you anything. The toilets are free for customers.

No normal Londoner would dream of using Harrods as a shop or restaurant. I only get things from the food hall for special dinners
