Bayern Pass

I've read several threads about the Bayern Pass and have looked at the web site:
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/pri...r-ticket.shtml

I know you can use the pass and terminate the journey in Salzburg but can you originate in Salzburg. Is this pass available from train stations in Salzburg? Vienna? The trip is Salzburg to Munich.

Thanks!

There is a DB ticket machine at the Salzburg station, where you can buy the ticket.

I knew you would come through for me, logos! You're the man!

I'm taking your brief response to mean that the journey can originate in Salzburg.

Danke

Since you're still awake, logos, a question on Munich (I know, I know...I forgot the 2 dots above the U).

Is the transportation system as good as in Frankfurt? Is it better to get a hotel at the airport for a 9:00 flight to NJ or stay in town? If it's easy to get to the airport I think staying in town is a better bet than an airport hotel. Thoughts?

Any good hotel recommendations?

I'm watching "A Quantum of Solace" on Austrian TV right now. So it seems, I'll be awake until 3am ;-)

It takes about 50 min from downtown to the airport, if the train is on time. Transportation is o.k., no more strikes in the next few months. I would stay close to the airport or in Freising, if my plane would leave at 9am. It's usually easy to get to the airport even in the early morning, but who knows?

I've never stayed in a hotel in Munich, my mom wouldn't have allowed me to spend so much money. ;-)

Check www.hrs.de for Freising, maybe look for a free airport shuttle. There's a public bus too that leaves from Freising station.

By the way, the name of the town is
München in high German but the real name is
Minga (pronounced "Meenga") in Bavarian.
No dots anywhere ;-)

Thanks again!

The Wikipedia site is in German and I don't speak German in any form...high, low, or Swiss.

I only know a few words to survive on - beer, ice, wine, and potatoes. LOL

In school my favorite English word was "always", because it's the same in Bavarian ("allwei"), but not in high German.
Bavarian and English are related .

I have stayed at the airport and in town before a flight.
www.kempinski.com that was the best. The train station comes right into the airport. There are a lot of nice cheaper places to stay along the route into the city. I booked a place once that said it was close to the train but was not and was in an industrial area. You had to take a bus to get to the train station. Freising is a good area. The Kempinski has some good rates at times so check them out first. I loved being right there for the early morning flight.

Can I ask a question?? Is the Bayern Pass good for 5 people at a cost of 28Euro for all or each?? We are planning a trip to Germany and originally I was looking into a Eurail pass for my family (5 in all). I looked into the Twin savings, but now I am second guessing my plans. If I understand the Bayern pass right, we could travel on all reginal trains (not ICE) and get from place to place. My questions are: Do we buy now, before we leave??, Are there time resrictions other than the before 9AM travel??, do they sell out, leaving one needing to buy a more expensive ticket? If it is 28 euro for five and relatively no other major restrictions, I would think 28 Xs 5 major trips = 140 rather than 5 days of travel with Eurail 1,035. This cannot be right...can it??

>all or each?
all
>buy now, before we leave?
whenever you want, it's available over the internet too, just print it on your printer.
>time resrictions other than the before 9AM travel?
starting journey same day
>do they sell out
No, tax subsidized, Deutsche Bahn gets money from the government for each ticket after they tell them the number of tickets sold.
>it is 28 euro for five and relatively no other major restrictions
Yes, the seats are financed by through tax money, that's why it's cheap. Use it, as long as it exists!

Bayern Pass-28 € for up to 5 persons. No, it is not good for the trip from Stuttgart to Munich. Each region has it's own Lander Pass. You can go to bahn.de and click on "offers" and get info on each region. I do not know if there is a map of each region available on bahn.de website, but you can go to google and enter the name of the region + map.

Yes - the Bayern pass is E28 or E29 for up to 5 people on a single day.

EurRail passes are not generally good buys as they are usually move expensive than point-to-point tickets. The Bayern pass is for Bavaria.

If you are planning trips within Germany that do not originate or terminate within Bavaria (including Salzburg area) then you should go to the German rail site and buy your tickets well ahead of time to get the best discounts. It's very simple to buy tickets from this site.
