Bath for 3 nights, no car, what can we see...

We will be in Bath for 3 nights early July. What areas outside Bath can we visit easily by public transport? Maybe the 3 days will be taken up with Bath! We would like to visit Castle Coombe. We did the Cotswolds in 98 and loved it. Any suggestions? We are staying at Haydon House a B&B in Bloomfield Park, Bath.

Go to the Tourist Office in Bath and ask about the Mad Max tour, which takes you to Stonehenge, Avebury, Castle Coombe and some other cute little town. It's all-day tour, and my mom and I loved it.

30 to 70 minutes away by train are:
Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bristol, Bridgewater, Taunton
Bradford on Avon, Westbury, Warminster, Salisbury
Chippenham, Swindon.
To see what each place offers you can use http://www.yahoo.co.uk, set the searcher to "UK only", and enter "Cheltenham travel", "Gloucester travel", and so on.

Three National Trust properties are a bus-ride away in Wiltshire, the Courts Garden, Great Chalfield Manor, and Westwood Manor: detail is on
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ under "county" then "Wiltshire".

All in all, plenty to do, car or no car.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to England.

Ben Haimnes, London

I think Wells (for the cathedral, chapter house, vicar's close and bisop's palace) and maybe also Glastonbury (for the Abbey ruins and the sights related to the Arthurian or early Christian mythology) would make a nice day excursion from Bath. Hourly Badgerline buses.

ron
