Barcelona to Nice
I have read most of the information posted on suggestions for trip to Barcelona and Nice, is this trip even recommended? I have about 12-15 days. Will appreciate any further insight you can provide. I trust the Fodorites opinions, have taken many trips having read all the information provided. Oh I will be traveling in July (I know one of the most crowded times of the year for Nice). Should I rent a car?

We made a trip like this (it was in May '98). When we left Barcelona we rent a car, and drove via Andora to Carcassone, then to Arels, Nimmes, Aix en Provance, to Cannes. We love the trip and all the cities we visited (we spent a night in Carcassone and another in Aix).

Hi Zme,
I made the trip from Barcelona to Nice a few years back. It was an overnight train and we sat up all night. There was one train change in the middle of the night, which was nasty (dragging 200 pounds of luggage up and down stairs..ugh!). That said, it was a beautiful trip. The train rides the coastline the entire trip. It is a great way to see the south of France. I personally would drive it if at all possible. You see the same beautiful places, but have the flexibility to stop whenever you want and explore. Have a great time!

Thank you so much, I was debating if I should rent a car but it seems to be a most. Any places you would recommend to stay? I was thinking of making Nice my base, I was thinking of La Perouse, any other ideas? And I have been reading that parking is a hassle, is that correct?

I was in Nice this past December with a car and had no trouble with finding parking. I haven't been there during the busy season, so I can't comment on the parking situation during that time.
We spent a day in Monaco, which was beautiful. Quite pricey when it comes to food and lodging, but worth it for the experience. We took the little train tour, which was great just to get a quick idea of where things are. You can catch it right across from the Oceanarium. We also drove to Aix, Grasse and Cannes. Everything is pretty easy to access if you use the autoroute. It is a tollway, so it will cost you. I believe you can get there other ways as well. This was my first visit to Nice, so we were busy doing the touristy things. I'm sure others on this forum have many more suggestions on other must sees in the area!
