I would recommend a daytrip to Figueres - the Dali Museum is spectacular (not an ordinary museum - the building itsself is a work of art). The train takes 1:53.
If the weather is good, you might consider a daytrip to Montserrat.
Otherwise, barcelona has enough attractions for more than 4 days.

I'm currently in Barcelona - I was here last year for 2.5 days. This time I have 7 days here; spending 6 days in Barcelona and one day trip to Montserrat. There's so much to see and do in Barcelona that I think it's easy to spend all 6 days here and not run out of things to do. (Will post a full trip report when I return next week.)

Hi there,
If you have 4 days in Barcelona then I think that is a very good amount of time to see many of the sites but you will not be able to see all..However you can choose the ones that interest you.
For day trips then I strongly recommend going to Montserret which is to far from Barcelona and is very easy to get to by train. It is very peaceful and beautiful there and if your lucky enough you can see the boys choir sing in the amazing Church they have there.
Otherwise you can also consider going to the north to Costa Brava which although is quite large, you can pick your spot and have a fantastic time there.
Otherwise to the south to Sitges perhaps which is a gorgeous city. That is only 45 minutes south of Barcelona by train.
Either way you have plenty of options and hope you enjoy your time in Spain.

Girona and Tarragona both make good daytrips or possible overnights if you want a change of pace (and don't mind packing/unpacking). Another great visit for a daytrip is to Vic, particularly on market day (Wednesday). Montserrat is beautiful and can be done in 1/2 day but beware of crowds around holidays. I don't know if crowds will be a factor the week before Christmas but I visited during a public holiday and the crowds were a nightmare. Perhaps the tourism office (or other posters) could give you some insight on which days would be better during your time frame.
