It depends on your taste...the Friedrichsbad (Roman/Irish) spa is magnificent in a classical way. But it's also a co-ed nude spa. If you're comfortable doing the spa thing nude with strangers, you will enjoy the beauty of the spa.
The Caracalla spa is magnificent in a modern way. You can wear your bathing suit (and your plain old baggy American suit is fine, no speedos necessary).
Hotel spas are another option, and are usually much more peaceful and it's so pleasant to just throw a bathrobe over your bathing suit and wander down to the spa without going outside.
On our most recent trip to Baden-Baden we stayed at the Dorint Hotel, right next to the casino. Our taste runs to modern rather than classical (the Brenner is a world famous place and quite elegant, but very traditional), which is why we chose the Dorint. The spa was very relaxing and we had two "treatments"--a back massage and reflexology (foot) massage, at the supplemental cost of about 30 euros each (the use of the spa facilities, pools, etc. are free).

The Schlosshotel isn't actually in Baden-Baden, it's 10 miles away. Unless you're planning to spend all your time in the hotel or its spa, IMHO, it would be better to stay in town...Baden-Baden is wonderful for strolling around at night or any time of day. Of course, if you can afford the Schlosshotel's rates, you can afford the taxi fare back and forth. But you lose the spontaneity of just wandering around town on a moment's notice.
How much do you plan to spend? Are you planning to stay overnight or is this a day trip?
FYI, Mark Twain visited the Friedrichsbad and remarked (paraphrased) that after 10 minutes in the spa you lose track of time and after 20 minutes, you lose track of the world.

Caracalla Spa was a magnificent treat for all ages (10-70) during a recent family trip from New England- architecturally beautiful and impecably clean, within walking distance from the Hotel Atlantic which is downtown Baden Baden. I agree with BTilke that you want to stay downtown - so much to see and do. As for the nudity at the spa - it is available on an upper floor if you want it. Children are not allowed up there. We also loved the indoor/outdoor aspect of the pools. We were there on a lovely day and spent most time in the outdoor spa section. Enjoy!

I'm planning to spend at least one day, maybe overnight, in Baden-Baden while hubby is taking classes in Strasbourg. Still not sure which place I will opt for. Guess it will depend on how much money we go through our first week in Bavaria!
Somewhere I came across a web site for the town of Baden-Baden and e-mailed for information on the spas. I got a large packet last week, mostly in English. I'm going to take a better look at it on the plane - we leave in 16 hours!!!
