I agree that the only way kids will really learn is to immerse them when they're really young! I learned Arabic, French and English when I was young, then picked up German at home with mom (swiss german) and Spanish in high school and got to practice all throughout my 20s-30s with internatioanl jobs. It was such a competitive advantage to find any job speaking 5 languages. Having only practiced French and English in recent memory, I've forgotten the others, but still retain a pretty good ear and can pick up quickly when needed. That's what I wish for son, but it's hard in the States. Wish we were in N/O, though! He must start soon or deal with his father's "deaf" language ear!
Swandav, I face the classic vicious circle: if I can afford having my son take summer classes in Switzerland, I must work, which means I have no time to take him (noone he can stay with there) If I don't work, then I have time, but not the funds! Maybe in a few years...but in the meantime, I have definitely looked into programs - there is a great one in Zurich!
I'll get there somehow....
