Back from Germany & Austria
Hello all,
Our much planned for trip is now a sweet memory.
I just want to thank everyone for answering my questions these past months.
To everyone that said go to the 2 hr. Marionette performance, a big thank you! The show was wonderful!
We stayed at the Hotel Bavaria in Berchestgaden and will recommend it highly. Our room was large, we had a balcony that I had to pry my husband from, and the breakfasts were varied and good. Their many types of bread were just too good to pass up.
While in Berchestgaden, we did a day trip to Salzberg, one to Hallstatt (would like to spend a night there),did the Eagle's Nest Tour (for my husband) and road the boat on lake Kongisee.
The lake was so crowded and the day was so hot that I was not as impressed as I should have been. We had to wait 45 minutes for a boat - really long lines.
The last day in Berchestgaden,I was climbing some steps and heard a pop. For the next 10 days, I relied on pain pills and a brace. I was determined not to forgo my vacation. I will have to have the knee scoped.
The 2nd 5 nights we spent in Klais, which is halfway between Garmish and Mittenwald. We stayed at the Guesthaus Post Klais, which I really loved. I can't say enough good things about this place. I felt as if I was coming home each night. The innkeeper and his wife are so sweet. He is also a chef and his food reflected that.
We did day trips to Linderhof,Ettal, Oberrammagu, the two castles,Innsbruke, and Zugspitze from this location. I loved Linderhof. It was my favorite of the 3 Ludwig places that we saw. I also really liked Ettal and the monastary there.Once I got up to Zugspitze, my husband had a hard time getting me to leave. It was a clear day and you could see mountain peaks forever. There was also snow.
The last 5 nights were spent in Munich at the Fleming Hotel. I was a little concerned because it was across from the train station, but it was so convenient. One-half block to the tram and across the street to the south entrance of the train station and the u-bahn and s-bahn. I'm glad that I had a/c in the hotel because Munich was hot! The locals said that it had not been that hot that early in the year in a long time. I threw a couple pairs of capri's in my luggage at the last minute and boy am I glad that I did.
We spent most of a day in the technical(sp) museum. I can't think of the name. It was interesting for both of us. We walked quite a bit in the mornings before my knee gave out and then sat in the beer gardens in the afternoon.
The morning that we left, we walked across to the train station and took the airport bus. I liked that because they handled all of your luggage and the cost was only 10 euros each.
If you have any questions, please just ask. I am not very good at writing trip reports
Thanks to everyone again.
Theresa

Sounds like a great trip. We really enjoyed Berchtesgaden and Hallstatt too. Sorry you didn't enjoy Koenigsee that much. We were there in September and actually went on a rainy day. It was not crowded though and the weather made it hauntingly beautiful.

I think that teens would like the marionette theater. It was much more than I expected.
Yes, the Eagle's Nest Tour was worth it. The gentleman that does the tour used to give it to the military before he started doing tours for the public.
logos999 - It was Hot last week in Munich. I live in a hot, humid area (deep south U.S.), so I know what hot is. We live in hot weather 10 months a year.

Theresa it wasn't hot at all, total bull*hit! Everybody way full of joy it wasn't as cold as before, hoping for summer to come with warmer weather.
It hasn't even started to get warmer yet.
It may be hot for a few days in late summer, but surely wasn't during the last weeks. Actually you won't find many people with a different opinion in town. I know everybody and the weather is the common subject.

Hi duncmon1,
Thanks for your trip report, we too are headed to Germany/Austria next year. Did you have a car or use public transport? Where did you attend the Marionette performance?
I will have to check out the Fleming Hotel, sounds good.

When we were in Munich, it was hot too (and logos - I just dare you to tell me it wasn't ) So when I read that you wandered around in the mornings and spent the afternoons in the beer gardens, it brought back sweet sweet memories because that is exactly what we did. And we had a wonderful time. My husband and I dream of retiring in Munich and spending our time drinking beer under the trees

duncmom1,
Enjoyed your report as we've been to many of the places you visited. Ypour not alone since e weren't really impressed with the boat ride on Koenigsee either. Did you get a chance to visit Mittenwald?

Thanks for the info Theresa. We are being met in Munich by a cousin of my husbands and he is touring Austria with us (His homeland). I thought I would mention a couple of places I know we would like to go. He has made all of our hotel arrangements for us, and so hopefully we will like them!

Paul, I'm surprised to hear you say that about Koenigsee. Did you see our photos of our boat trip on Koenigsee? They were amazing!

Hi bettyk,
Yes I did see your photo's. We have similar ones here! We weren't disappointed with the scenery at all! It was the boat ride (too slow and long for us) and St. Bartholomew's, while a picture perfect scene from the boat, wasn't much inside. Especially compared to others in the area. We love the area and have stayed on two separate trips recently. When (if, you never know) we get to travel again, we will certainly go back.

Hi bettyk,
If you're interested, take a look at:
www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/travel11.html
under "Berchtesgaden/Ramsau Germany area10/06"
The photo of the onion domed church (St. Bartholomews) from the lake is obviously a "must" picture for everyone, lol.

Paul, we did go to Mittenwald. Klais, where we were based, was only 4 miles away, I really liked it, but that was where I had to look for a drugstore for something for my knee. The lady at the drugstore was so nice and kind and oufitted me in a brace and gave me something for swelling. My day there was unfortuantly tempered by much pain. I regretted that and would like to go back when I could explore.
Betty - It's not that I didn't enjoy the scenery at the lake, it was just so crowded. The boats were so packed that you couldn't turn around to look out of the windows.
I am humbled by the many friendly, kind people that we were blessed to meet and interact with.
BTW, for those who asked, we did have a car and the Marionette Theater is in Salzberg.

duncmom1,
Sorry to hear that part of your trip had to be done with a brace and experiencing pain. Similar thing happened to my wife just a few years ago. Fractured her big toe on our 4th day of a 2 week trip. We saw a doctor and then got a "shoe" from a pharmacy in Sterzing/Vipiteno. She was in pain, but she did make the best of it.
Some of our best memories are due to the friendliness of the people we have stayed with and met along the way.
Glad to hear you experienced the same.

duncmom1, yes, I figured the crowds probably had something to do with your disappointment. That's why I'm glad we didn't have that problem as I'm sure I would have felt the same way.
When we were in Meersburg last September, my husband started having a lot of pain in his feet and ankles from tendonitis and arthritis. I remember how wonderful the lady at the nearby drugstore was when he inquired about buying a cane. She seemed truly concerned and was so patient explaining to him where he could find one.
That is one of the reasons I have always enjoyed traveling in Germany.
