Back Alive after Wearing Shorts
Hello all -

Just back from Hungary - and despite all the protestations from Fodor posters about not wearing sneakers, shorts, etc.- I had a great time and got away with wearing those unmentionables. Except for the first day in Budapest, when I was just off the plane and kept my long pants on, I wore shorts and sneakers the entire time. Even got to visit churches and synagogues and dined in nice restaurants!!!

Questions on either Hungary or attire are welcome.

Hiho: It is one thing to troll this discussion board, it is quite another to suggest that one can actually wear shorts in a European country. That is blasphemy and I demand a retraction!!! If you don't retract your statement, I will start a thread polling whether you should be banned from this board for your crimes against Fodorism. (By the way, I strangely survived too (wearing shorts) in Germany, France, the UK....)

This is a good thread, and I will join the club as I just got back from France where -- I WORE SHORTS!!!! Not in Paris though as it was raining chats et chiens, ha, ha, but down in Provence I did as it was quite hot there. I remember one post on here even claimed that people didn't wear them in Provence. Well, guess what, they do. In fact, I was staying in Podunkville France and wandered into a local hotel restaurant which was, I gather, the hot spot for the locals on Friday night. I was the only American tourist in there (I often was around there, luckily I speak French) and they were really sweet to me. It was funny, the guy who was director of the dining room wanted to meet me because I was from US (server told him) and said he had a friend who lived on Bleecker St in NY, did I know it? (I'm from Wash DC) Anyway, this was not a high class place, for French locals-- I thought gold chains had gone out with the disco era, but guess not, and one of these local French guys was wearing-- to DINNER in one of the few restaurants around those parts--a T-shirt and very short nylon running shorts and athletic shoes!!!! Then, (I wish I'd had a video camera as it was like that skit on Sat night live), the live music came out -- a guy on keyboards and his female partner playing accordion who did a rendition of a Mexican popular tango song (adios, muchachos, companeros, ....) with a French accent before they segued into some disco song. It was surreal.

Of course you can wear shorts, it just looks oafish on most people to wear shorts to anywhere but a casual resort on vacation. People can dress as poorly as they want, just most stylish people don't want to.
Also, alot of people wouldn't if they looked in a full length mirror at their behinds!
