Back Alive after Wearing Shorts

Hello all -

Just back from Hungary - and despite all the protestations from Fodor posters about not wearing sneakers, shorts, etc.- I had a great time and got away with wearing those unmentionables. Except for the first day in Budapest, when I was just off the plane and kept my long pants on, I wore shorts and sneakers the entire time. Even got to visit churches and synagogues and dined in nice restaurants!!!

Questions on either Hungary or attire are welcome.

Hiho, I know you usually get blasted on this forum but I have to thank you.

This topic headed made me laugh out loud. Hilarious, and maybe will make some of us come back to reality. (And I have never carried a pair of shorts to Europe.)

Hiho I don't believe you. You just posted yesterday.

Where exactly did you go in Hungary and where did you stay?

Yeah Jul 26th, 2001 03:27 AM

Hiho,
Why is it that some people feel so proud to have "gotten" into churches and holy places with improper attire? It's not a class thing, you can find suitable clothing at any Goodwill outlet. It's a respect thing.

hiho Jul 26th, 2001 03:31 AM

Mary - thank you for the kind words!! they are much appreicated

xxxx - (i am not sure of the pronunciation of your name, maybe you can clue me in) - i am not sure how to respond - why do you doubt my veracity?

when i say i just got back - it was a recent trip, tho not quite as recent as yesterday - but it could have been - they do have internet in hungary

anyway, i shall stoop to your level and answer your question - i was in budapest (hotel victoria), szentendre, eger, visegrad, pecs, sopron, and fertod.

Also, Hiho, a little lower on this site is your July 18 post about shorts. Do you have a problem of some sort? I smell LSK.

hiho Jul 26th, 2001 03:33 AM

Dear Yeah - I was taught that Yeah was slang, and I like to treat English with the respect it deserves - as in Yes. I am sorry that you miss the point of the post.

Hiho: It is one thing to troll this discussion board, it is quite another to suggest that one can actually wear shorts in a European country. That is blasphemy and I demand a retraction!!! If you don't retract your statement, I will start a thread polling whether you should be banned from this board for your crimes against Fodorism. (By the way, I strangely survived too (wearing shorts) in Germany, France, the UK....)

hiho Jul 26th, 2001 06:47 AM

Dear trying...to help

I can't believe that you went to WESTERN Europe, wore shorts, and came back alive!! Good show!!

This is a good thread, and I will join the club as I just got back from France where -- I WORE SHORTS!!!! Not in Paris though as it was raining chats et chiens, ha, ha, but down in Provence I did as it was quite hot there. I remember one post on here even claimed that people didn't wear them in Provence. Well, guess what, they do. In fact, I was staying in Podunkville France and wandered into a local hotel restaurant which was, I gather, the hot spot for the locals on Friday night. I was the only American tourist in there (I often was around there, luckily I speak French) and they were really sweet to me. It was funny, the guy who was director of the dining room wanted to meet me because I was from US (server told him) and said he had a friend who lived on Bleecker St in NY, did I know it? (I'm from Wash DC) Anyway, this was not a high class place, for French locals-- I thought gold chains had gone out with the disco era, but guess not, and one of these local French guys was wearing-- to DINNER in one of the few restaurants around those parts--a T-shirt and very short nylon running shorts and athletic shoes!!!! Then, (I wish I'd had a video camera as it was like that skit on Sat night live), the live music came out -- a guy on keyboards and his female partner playing accordion who did a rendition of a Mexican popular tango song (adios, muchachos, companeros, ....) with a French accent before they segued into some disco song. It was surreal.

Great story Christina!! I live in DC also. And guess what - as I am sure you know, they are wearing shorts here also.

Dee Jul 26th, 2001 01:04 PM

I guess it's the same philosophy of people who wear shorts and running suits to church where ever they live. It's a lack of respect. Our culture has become way too casual and there doesn't seem to be much "good taste" anymore.

Chubby but Classy Jul 26th, 2001 03:08 PM

Of course you can wear shorts, it just looks oafish on most people to wear shorts to anywhere but a casual resort on vacation. People can dress as poorly as they want, just most stylish people don't want to.
Also, alot of people wouldn't if they looked in a full length mirror at their behinds!

God Jul 26th, 2001 03:14 PM

Shorts are "improper" or "disrespectful" attire in churches only in the minds of you humans and your oh-so-precious rules.

Gams Galore Jul 26th, 2001 04:02 PM

Maybe hiho (is that Hawaiian?)just wants to show off her/his long, shapley legs to all those Europeans who are interested.

Picky Jul 26th, 2001 04:05 PM

Hi Hiho, anyone can wear shorts, it is just the rest of us that has to look at them while you are in them that is disturbing (for us).

ToHiHo Jul 26th, 2001 05:35 PM

I think love you!

brain Jul 27th, 2001 09:05 AM

Hey, look([email protected]) -- who exactly is this LSK and what does he/she smell like?

lilo Jul 27th, 2001 09:15 AM

What does LSK mean? And what does "hiho" stand for?
