b/w Thun and Solothurn
Hi,
We are planning on a day trip from Murren to Bern. We were earlier thinking of a stopping at Thun and spending some time there on our way back.
However I have been reading about Solothurn and the church and the old town look really appealing to me.
Can anybody say which would be a better stop?
We are already doing boat rides, Lucerne to Weggis...and then would also take a trip to Kandersteg.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Genie

That's like comparing apples with oranges.
Solothurn is a very quaint small village with a wonderful medieval atmosphere. It takes about two hours (at the most) to see but they have very nice restaurants there.
Thun is on the lake and has a castle and an old town. Not as quaint but very convenient to get to.
If you want small, quaint and medieval, go to Solothurn.
If you want shops, lake and an active old town with a castle (don't know if they still do tours) go to Thun.
I really enjoyed Solothurn in January. See my trip report: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2

Thanks Schuler...this link doesn't seem to work...however that small report that you have done, is the one that got me going on Solothurn.
I completely understand the two are very different...however we have limited time, and along with Bern we can either do Solothurn / Thin.
What I was hoping for was an idea that if we did have to choose between the two, keeping the rest of our itinerary in mind....what would you suggest?
Though my lonely plan recommends Thun as a stop over very highly on our way back from Bern, where as I personally am leaning towards solothurn.
Thanks
