The terms ensuite, private and shared all relate to bathrooms.
ensuite = bathroom in the bedroom
private = your own bathroom for private use, but not actually in the room. could be right next door or down the hall
shared = bathrooms down the hall shared by 2 or more bedrooms.

Oops!Sorry about the empty post.
At first I thought, 4 separate rooms? What, are they crazy?! That gets pretty expensive. Maybe you're all young and single? Nod nod wink wink? In which case perhaps a hotel or guesthouse would be a better choice than a B & B. However, you may just end up with a whole B&B to yourselves, in which case the bathroom issue would be moot. (some B&B establishments are small and only have a handfull of rooms to offer).

What's so crazy about adults wanting their own rooms? Nobody said they were poor or had to bunk with someone if they don't want to or aren't used to it, or that they live together or are related--maybe they are adults with decent jobs who want privacy at the end of the day and to be alone to decompress. I travel to Europe alone all the time and pay for my own room, so what's the difference just because these friends or relatives want to travel together for fun or companionship? Especially since they are talking about B&Bs, it won't be super expensive.
Actually, in Budman's example I would say the couple had the supplement if they would have to pay 70 euro for the same room a single person could get for 50 euro.

Christina - perhaps 'crazy' is too strong a word. I'm used to having to indulge in 'budget' travel (though I'm not "poor"
and so I probably have a different mind set about these things. I have difficulty imagining travel with people with whom I would not care to share a room. Each to their own, and vive la difference. In any case, the fella didn't ask about rooms, but bathrooms - so I guess we've wandered from the topic...

We stayed in Kilrush at a wonderful B&B. The lady who ran the B&B told us that once there was a group of 4 golfers who wanted 4 separate rooms -- their own privacy.
They each had to pay the single supplement, whatever that might be.
If I were going to Ireland with a group of golfers (which I might be doing next year), I would want my own room and my own privacy. Maybe it's a "guy" thingy.

There is usually a single supplement for single rooms. Also It is frowned upon bringing people back...its NOT a hotel but someones home and you can end up with a lot of hassle and anger from the owner. It would be like paying for 1 and sneaking another in

The single supplement is to offset the loss of income for the room (normal occupancy being two or more). The reason it is less than double is that only one is fed breakfast. Pricing varies by establishment, but I would most definitely say that four separate rooms would mandate that you pre-book all nights and that none of you use vouchers.
