B&B"S and Small Inns in Scotland

we will be renting a car and following "Great Itinerary"s suggested in Fodor's but we want to stay in small places...we will start at ST Andrews,go up to Inverness,a day in Isle of SKye and another night before returning to Glassgow (our rental starts here). We are avoiding Edinburgh altogether because we are traveling in the middle of August(Festival Time). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I'm a bit unclear on your post. You say you're starting in St. A, and your rental starts in Glasgow. How many nights will you be on the road? If you can tell me, I will be happy to recommend two delightful b and b's in the west.

Aarons Guest House in Perth is wonderful! We stayed there one night in August 2008 and everything was lovely.

BTW - One day on Skye (especially if you are driving from Inverness), is not anywhere close to enough time on that beautiful island. You'll barely scratch the surface.

Hi Tower-The rental starts in Glasgow because that is where we are flying in and out . We have seven days to travel. I would prefer to find something as a base of operations for two nights before we pack and move on to the next hotel. We will leave and start traveling east...see some small towns before we get to ST.Amdrews, then head north(Inverness)then go west and start going south.. My husband likes to hike so I want him to have some time to explore the countryside

"<i>our rental starts here</i>" You are not required to drop your car where you pick it up - so circling back to Glasgow doesn't have to be . . . but since you r are flying in out of GLA, that does make some sense.

You really do need to look at a map of Scotland. Your plan is hectic/looooong/and very "car intensive".

GLA to St Andrews to Inverness to Skye to Glasgow won't leave much/any time for 2 night stays or your son's hikes. And you really DON'T want to drive from GLA all the way to St Andrews after getting off an overnight/long haul flight.

Scotland is a very big place w/ some pretty slow roads -- especially in the places you are traveling.

Would you mind if we started again for you? You have a week in and out of Glasgow, with a hire car when you're not in Glasgow, and your priorities are 2 nights before driving anywhere; small towns, and pretty countryside to walk in? Any Must Sees? (I hate that expression, really).

First trip to Scotland?
