<I've left with a copy of the hire document signed, timed and dated to state that " no further charges due".>
As many have noted, this is not always possible to do.
<It hasn't happened to me.>
Surely you don't think this is because you are uniquely virtuous?
Fodorites are like the apes in 2001, furiously trying to placate the gods of travel with the primitive tools at their disposal.

>>I've rented over 200 times in 40 odd countries. Never once been charged.<<
You're special.
>>Had lots of issues, had attempted stings on various occasions but after every rental, I've left with a copy of the hire document signed, timed and dated to state that " no further charges due".<<
You're really, really special.
>>Smug, "as if".<<
The Language Police are hiring. But you have to rent your own vehicle. Make sure you return it in good order.

Well, we have only rented about 27 times in Europe and I have had 2 problems.
The one with Europcar I forget all the circumstances, but Auto Europe helped me get some dollars back
Hertz was awful. The car we had was the worse car ever rented with small damage and I attempted to mark up everything.
On our return, a mark was found on the lower bumper and we were charged 300 euros. Fortunately I had AX insurance and the whole 300 euros was paid by AX.
Things do happen with all these companies.
Good luck with your complaint.

***rib: And when was that don't-join-to-complain rule instituted here?
The poster did not say he/she was "located" in the UK. They said the rental was in the UK. The amount would be in dollars, because when you get a CC bill with a charge from outside the US, the amount is converted to dollars.***
I never wrote that that there is a any such rule here. And if you had cared to look at the link I provided you will see the same complaint was written by Kellie Selwood from the United Kingdom
Sometimes you should put your glasses on before you read the computer screen ;-)

That is a Fodors thread at its best.
An OP clueless and over-ranting and one old regular ranter putting on his paladin armour to teach us all how to behave and to protect the naive.
I am pretty sure OP is not reading anymore and anybody with half a brain who would stumble across this thread would stop reading fast.
But it is entertaining to read Vincenzo.
Please carry on.
I am however like British. I have rented several hundreds of cars and never once found cause (enough) to complain. Maybe some people have more bad luck or are quicker to complain.
